I think this is correct. As more aging friend groups stay in touch playing online together (or in parallel on a shared stream), you want your monthly fee to be waved away as the price of friends. Or at the very least, you know every minute you've got them, they're not using your competitor's stuff.

Douthat’s whole schtik is being a Christian intellectual, so he’s pretty bullish on the whole “humanity was given a divine order to be fruitful and multiply” thing. And by association, anything that goes against his beliefs is implicitly pushing us toward total extinction.
