Exactly so. We should prepare: these people expected they would be recognised as heroes for their courageous court triumph, and then society would simply reform itself to accommodate their desires. When it doesn’t - and it won’t - they won’t think Whoops, we have fucked it, it’s us who are cracked.

Hard agree. As it happens, I've been reading a biography of Harold Wilson in which it makes clear he favoured membership as a hard-headed economist but his heart was never in it, and therein lies a problem which persists to this day.
