I’m often in Wales these days - at first 20mph was a pain. Now I find it’s changed how I drive in urban areas everywhere. Becomes second nature to be more aware of your speed.

Durham VCH re-launched in 1999 to write the Darlington volume.
Then came a plan to trial something new and lighter - and ‘Townscape’ became the VCH’s first ever paperback.
It sold out, and now it’s back!
RIP friend and colleague Dr Christine Newman. She’d have been a happy author too.

Industrialisation too: Victorians couldn’t bear the grassroots-driven reality, had to be ‘great men’, Royal Society, flash of brilliance etc.
And those fables have stuck. Still trotted out by rather eminent historians.
