There were 1.8 million assault convictions in the US in 2023. 1254 of them were perpetrated by illegal migrants. That’s a whopping 0.069%.

There were 7000 homicides in the US last year. 29 out of 7000? That’s about 0.41%. And this is based on the government’s own numbers.

I’m not a big fan of Henry James, mainly because I am a slow reader, and I just haven’t gotten around to him. But I certainly understand the sentiment. (Sadly, Delaney only got to chapter 9 before he died of a stroke. But I highly recommend his commentary. It’s still available.)

I just heard this on an old podcast called Re-Joyce in which the late Frank Delaney explicated Ulysses, pretty much paragraph by paragraph. He simply threw this in, and I’m doing the same.
