“There is more than one kind of freedom, said Aunt Lydia. Freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don’t underrate it.”

and honestly, the obsession over “we should have said more about biden being old” starts to grate when the currently serving president is very obviously impaired by age and cognitive decline, to crickets from the press

The cool part about The Onion in print is people leave them around coffee shops and workplaces. Kids steal them and bring them to school. People love this shit, which makes the staff happy, which makes the paper better, which makes business better. We consult no algorithm. We just make fun of jerks.

But I’m willing to bet a lot of these folks are the type to evangelize to their neighbors and have a disproportionate influence on the near zero info voters

one of the counterintuitive things about authoritarianism is that it sucks for everyone, quite literally up to and including the authoritarians themselves. Every dictator is paranoid; the pervasive fear that they create makes everyone less safe and more afraid, including themselves and their lackeys

Absolutely nuts to me, I’ve seen fewer clearer causal results and it wasn’t a policy that seemed to run afoul of a major interest group (oil, pharma). Simply didn’t like the look of a federal benefit as a line item.

I think it’s a really key observation that it’ll spike wages - there’ll be some core government functions that are either going to become more expensive or are going to be privatized… and more expensive. Musk et al fundamentally don’t understand workers with other value systems than $.

Would be great if someone did something about it! I guess $10 for Andrew Gillum should do it!

Are you saying it’s a hard transition for someone who has been paid more or it’s hard for someone that far in their career? If it’s the former, I think bio science might get tougher soon with different postures on regulation and a lack of medical literacy/RFK types being entertained

Not necessarily throwing my hat in the ring but would love to get your thoughts on how we get more scientists/teachers/medical professionals represented!

Hi Ed, please post as much information for grassroots organizing especially in the MA area. This will probably be a mobilizing time for the scientific community and it’s clear that our scientific messaging hasn’t been effective enough, especially in rural communities, and I’d like to help.

Culture wars are both unloseable and unwinnable. The people who participate in them will never be happy. Never. CatTurd2 will never feel joy.
