These are the people who have been killed by Trump and Musk's sudden execution of USAID. You damn well do not get to look away from this.

“I promise you, it would have been a war crime.” that’s what Alejandro Barranco told me what would have happened if he treated a detainee when he was deployed to Afghanistan with the Marines like federal agents treated his father.

Genuinely wept at this by @attackerman.bsky.social. Yes, you have to squint to see even the hint of a dawn, but you have to appreciate the wins when they come. Well done, NYC.

I don't think we talk enough about how dignity is also a human right. Food, water, shelter, education, health care, representation...all of those are human rights that everyone should receive regardless of who they are. But it's also a right to not have to beg for them.

If you need a mask to enforce the law, you don’t deserve a badge. Federal agents are snatching people off the streets—faces covered, names hidden. This isn’t safety. It’s secrecy. It’s not America. adamkinzinger.substack.com/p/why-are-fe...

Rolling Stone has excerpted an essay from my forthcoming book. It's about what happens when you get all of your info about the world from the TV (cops are heroes!), and then go out into the world and see for yourself. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

I can’t speak for every city, but here in LA, ICE bounty hunters aren’t going after gang members. They’re hunting the vulnerable: gardeners, street vendors, day laborers. Easy money, no risk. Folks need to stop pretending this is about crime. @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social—thank you for your words.

“It’s the largest redistribution from poor to rich in a single bill in American history.” It's a play in three regressive parts: 1. Tax cuts for the rich. 2. Spending cuts on the poor. 3. Tariffs that hit low-income folks hardest.

DISASTROUS. This means they will send people to horrific situations with no due process — in direct violation of promises the Solicitor General made to the Court in previous cases. This greenlights sending people to be enslaved in Libya or tortured in any random foreign country.

We are posting this placard at all of our offices and asking our union contract farms to post as well. We encourage our friends to put up similar placards at their business as immigration agents do not have the right to go on private property without permission.

Happy birthday to Alan Turing, OBE, FRS (1912 – 1954), British #mathematician, #cryptanalyst, computer scientist, & prophet. 🧪🐡 Turing foresaw not only that machines might quite likely develop the capacity to think (after all, our brains are only made of matter, & complex systems of neurons, which 🧵

sorry I can't get over how cynical this is. dude *just* voted for a bill that was pushed by the crypto lobby and left out any protections against Trump's corruption. *now* he's claiming to address the issue with a bill that will never pass? this is galling even by modern Dem standards

This Thursday at 8:30 P.M. (US East Coast time,) join me and a panel of ocean science and conservation experts as we watch the new David Attenborough documentary and discuss it! Everyone push play- it's on Disney+ and Hulu - at the same time, and use #OceanChat to discuss! #SciComm 🦑🧪🌎🐟

Utterly devastating that the Trump regime has destroyed these crucial efforts to reunite stolen Ukrainian children with their families (including a program that was run by my old boss and many of my former colleagues): dc.medill.northwestern.edu/blog/2025/06...

I was briefed on the intelligence last week. Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States. Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon. The negotiations Israel scuttled with their strikes held the potential for success.

In the coming weeks, if this explodes, there will be (even more) public discrimination against and malign treatment of Arab and Muslim Americans, especially Iranian Americans. Let's make sure we stand with and protect them as much as we can.

I got mad and I wrote about it.

NEW: Judge Farbiarz, now in writing, orders the release of Mahmoud Khalil on bail TODAY. AND—happy surprise—he reconsiders and adds a line forbidding electronic monitoring, as Judge Sessions did for Rümeysa Öztürk. He also forbids monetary bond due today. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

HAPPENING NOW: Judge Farbiarz hears arguments on Mahmoud Khalil's request to be released on bail. 🧵

Today's episode of Rare Earth was all about critical minerals (including rare earths, hooray!). What are they, and do their benefits for a cleaner greener electrified world outweigh any environmental damage that mining them might cause? Listen now on BBC Sounds: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

I was waiting for this, and it is about what I expected. Long and short, people need to stop repeating this without adding that it is utterly unsubstantiated.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

in addition to connor’s point about the composition of congressional districts, it is worth saying that continetti’s point or objection makes no sense in the context of american history where, lawmakers routinely represented people otherwise outside the circle of equal citizen

I wish people would listen to people who write & teach writing for a living. We know that there is something *extremely important* contained within the process of writing. Writing, editing, revising, getting feedback, sitting with your thoughts, changing your thoughts. Writing IS thinking.

How many times did we fucking tell you. You gave up on wearing masks. You let them demonize masks. So they got to write the rules. And the rules are cops “discretion” is that disabled people should be arrested. Because when ableds get to decide who is actually disabled, we lose. Every time.

It's 2p here in Boston, and we're back on the record in the NIH grant terminations case. It's possible Judge Young could issue some sort of ruling here in the next few minutes, or he could provide more context for case management going forward. Stay tuned.

Because I am a Recognized Safety Person on the Internet, I get questions. Specifically, about personal protective equipment (PPE) to take to a protest assuming a cop riot will happen. I have a meta-answer people do not like. Bringing PPE to a protest will be claimed as a intent to resist arrest.

I did an event in DC & there was a party for donors etc after. Was talking to 2 ppl & I said "Things are so bad." They said "No this is how it is. Things swing one way, then another. It's normal." That's when I realized why Dems are toothless. They have no idea what this is. Frogs boiling in water.
