You said I was arguing against it. I’m not.

I’m not arguing against it, I clearly said Linux is amazing for the right people. If someone isn’t happy with windows then they should experiment with new things. What I said was, that if someone is perfectly happy using windows, then they should just stick with what they like.

People also might just be lazy. Migrating your life over to a new OS is a lot of effort, especially for new users. It gets worse when you look at businesses or schools, migrating 100’s or even 1000’s of computers is an issue amount of work, that leaves a lot of downtime and disruption, all for what?

Do you not think that people have tried other OS’s and came back to what they were comfortable with? People live, grow and find comfort in things they know, and leaving that is hard. Especially when relevant reasons to switch are hard to come by.

I feel like this is coming back to “Linux is a great OS, if you need it”. As opposed to “Linux should be used instead of MacOS or Windows”. Which is what I was always saying lol

I’m also not gatekeeping, if someone wants to try Linux for whatever reason they should absolutely. But most people don’t see much reason to. Also, why should I be helping them, when they can just use resources online? It’s not like that might get overwhelming or anything

I’m not fighting for anything, I’m saying that I don’t think it’s pure luck MacOS and windows are the most widely used OS when it comes to personal computers. If someone’s happy with windows or MacOS, I’m not going to take time out of my day to say “you should completely switch to this thing”

And what’s stopping people from migrating to Linux, and moving to a world with other problems and less widespread help. Frustration isn’t unique to Windows, but the much larger community is. Linux needs time and much more adoption from schools and businesses. (Excluding servers, IOT devices etc)

I daily drive Linux, and love it. Im not saying it’s worse than windows, far from it. I’m saying that people need actual reasons to switch rather than “see Linux can do *standard/ hyper specific feature*”. There’s no inherent reason for people to switch from something that works for them fine

But why should the average person switch to Linux? These are features standard in any big OS, so why should they leave if what they have works. I don’t think the average user will understand the value of open source software or intricate access to their devices. They need real reasons to switch

It’s not that at all. You can do nearly everything on Linux, just like any other OS. And there are guides to help you do all of that. I’m saying that most people don’t want to have to sit through guides and terminals just todo everything their old OS did perfectly fine

And your right about windows, but GUI’s and widely available tech support go a long way to helping an OS’s ease of use

The average user isn’t doing that though. They just want to watch Netflix and play games. Once again, for the right people Linux is amazing, but I don’t think Linux has enough genuine, relevant selling points to make an average user switch primarily to Linux. (Obv excluding experimentation etc)

Realistically for Linux? Pop OS or Ubuntu. Both very popular (which helps when solving problems) and easy (ish) to use

That doesn’t teach someone how or why they’re using Linux however. That just creates frustration and annoyance with and OS that’ll drive them back to what they used before. I’m not saying that Linux is bad for the average user, I’m saying that without good reason people will stick to what they know

Searching “Facebook download” is probably much easier for casual and new users than learning what is essentially a new language in the terminal. There’s also the stuff you don’t notice with windows and Mac, mainly with how shit just works (usually), and if it doesn’t, theres easy tech support online

Linux is amazing, for the people that need or want it. I daily drive Linux myself, but I understand that converting people to a new, unintuitive OS isn’t easy. Especially with how widely used Mac and Windows is. No matter how good this distros get, most people will stick to what they know

Try teaching Beth from HR to configure a package manager or to update her BIOS. I’m sure that’ll go over easy. Windows and especially MacOS have been very intentionally made idiot proof because not everyone wants or even has the time to spend learning a new OS, when what they have already works well

As much as Linux is amazing and important for everyone, the lack of ease of use for everyday users means it’ll be stuck without widespread usage… :(
