There *must* be an early modernist out there who (a) has a full set of Samuel Pepys' diaries on their shelves; and (b) points to those shelves every time someone asks them how they would describe themselves as an academic and says, "these are my Pepys".

Our colleague @sarahannebuckley.bsky.social was interviewed by Seán Moncrieff at Newstalk about the new NCCA modules www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/529...

📣 Kneecap statement repost from X:

Our post offering #Kneecap an all profits to charity gig has been taken down. The reason? The offer also included a hit on Netanyahu from part of the profits (as if we could do that 😂) But anyway, who doesn't want that outcome for the genocidal psychopath?? Very poor @bsky.app

A couple of pictures of Clontuskert Augustinian Friary from Sunday's @tuatha.ie tour. An excellent day out

In #Gaza, people continue to be treated like pinballs forced to flee in search of safety that doesn’t exist. With nearly 20 months of war, people are exhausted, disoriented, grieving, and constantly in fear. This hardship and uncertainty must end. #CeasefireNow

#AThousandBlows was 'woke nonsense'. 'Overly diverse for the period'. 'Inclusion regardless of accuracy'. Some of those early 'reviews' were very interesting! The late-Victorian boxing world in England has LAYERS. I can't wait to share more stories - they really need to be told.

A claim that Dublin is the ninth “unsafest” city in Europe has been shared, despite no reliable evidence that this is the case. The finding was published by an online betting company’s ranking of casino destinations, based solely on surveys. jrnl.ie/6715342b

A fantastic find at Drumanagh! www.rte.ie/news/2025/05...

Surprisingly fresh-looking 3rd-century glass goblet with enamelled painting illustrating the myth of hero Achilles’ amorous adventures on the island of Skyros. Unearthed 1991 in excavation on Richard Wagner Strasse, Cologne (Romisch-Germanisches Museum)

As a member of Exec. Committee of SSMLL, I wholeheartedly endorse this statement of support for our #US colleagues whose research has been impacted by cuts to #NEH. If you have cash to spare to support the projects highlighted in the 🧵 please donate, though I know times are hard. #MedievalSky 👇🏻

Reuters confirm that the photo of alleged white genocide in South Africa showed humanitarian workers lifting body bags in the Congolese city of Goma. www.reuters.com/world/africa...

Just utter lawlessness from the Trump Administration, with no goal other than to punish institutions for refusing to bend the knee. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

Looks like even Simon Harris as Minister for Foreign Affairs is now using the term genocide. Well past time now for those who dismissed and, in some cases, denigrated those who raised the alarm to acknowledge this reality.

Building a bed (imda) using our own hazel in our early medieval roundhouse for UCD Festival on 7th June 2025, as part of our “Early Medieval People and Things (EMPAT)” project

Powerful account by our colleague @sarahannebuckley.bsky.social and Elaine Feeney of the importance of the decision by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment to publish modules addressing the history, legacy and literature of Ireland’s institutions www.thejournal.ie/readme/mothe...

Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”. Good academics acknowledge this. I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.

The Summer 2025 issue of Archaeology Ireland is about to go to press and it's looking wonderful. An advance peak at the cover for you here. The gentleman on the cover is St Matthew with his tablets, from 1395, from the library at St Gallen.

None of the 278 men sent to CECOT have been returned. Meanwhile their lawyer has been arrested and "disappeared" in El Salvador.

NEW: The Co-op could stop selling Israeli products as early as this summer after board members voted in favour of a boycott 👇

This is what a leader does. This is what a leader sounds like. THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM DO NOT OBEY. SPEAK YOUR MIND.

Reconstruction of early medieval crannog on Lough Derravarragh, at Coolure Demesne, Co Westmeath (by Conor McDermott, based on photos by Aidan O’Sullivan, with the added benefit of the young Billy MagFhloinn as an early medieval coracle man)
