I think some of this is backlash. Certain genres, types of stories, etc, are frequently given the "why would you write bad things happening to someone, that's evil" like reading it will corrupt you. And eventually people snap from that and start judging the lifelong cozies in return. It's a cycle.

What you have to understand is that book bans are a classic case of survivorship bias. Some survive, yes. But only if they're lucky OR prepared. If all of the copies of a book are destroyed, it. is. gone. And you won't know what you've lost. It'll be absent.
