I was told we were letting states deal with their own problems now

I regret to say that my city is not very good at picking mayors. We will end up with either Adams or Cuomo, I fear. And this is particularly sad because there are actually a few good candidates running in the Democratic primary.

I didn't think to make a sign, but there were actually people there offering appropriate signs to people who didn't have them. Now that's organization!

The hands-off protests (at least in NYC, where I was) were an excellent example of an effective protest, IMO. Huge, enthusiastic, well-organized, and well behaved. We made a strong statement, and I doubt we alienated anyone. And yes, there was music, excellent signs, etc.

Certainly I have also seen plenty of protests that had assholery. I think his point is generally correct; I am just saying that I have in fact seen large protests that blessedly did not have asshole participants.

As far as I know, the hands-off protests in New York City (which were ginormous) had no such negative events. Even the police said protesters were well-behaved (and they were relieved because they hadn't expected such a huge number and didn't have much manpower covering it).

(There are a few reasons I prefer Lander to Mamdani as a candidate; one is that I think he'd be stronger in the general election against Adams & the GOP candidate. He's progressive but much more palatable IMO to those who aren't actively pro-socialist. Cuomo might be too, but I can't vote for him.

Going head-to-head in the general, IMO Adams could quite conceivably beat either Mamdani or Cuomo. A lot of people are suspicious of the socialist thing (notwithstanding very strong support for it in other NYC constituencies), & many hate a carpetbagger (which Cuomo is).

Everyone seems to assume that whoever wins the Democratic primary will win the New York mayoral race, so the media is entirely focused on that. But generally, there isn't an incumbent independent candidate. and as seedy as Adams is, I think he still has support from some key constituencies.

I saw a disturbing number of Adams flags and pins at the Puerto Rican Day parade yesterday.

I do it with other places sometimes, too. You know, it does make me appreciate them more. Perhaps especially because some places I knew have become abandoned (you photographed one—the Fallside hotel).

I will note one more thing. It is not true, as you claim, that there is always an element of violence and vandalism at protests. I've participated in a couple of absolutely huge ones in NYC that didn't have a whisper of it despite the huge crowds.

You are, and as a matter of fact you are doing so explicitly

I am amazed at how many people will twist themselves into pretzels to justify vandalism and violence that only hurt the movements claim they claim to care about

Yes. Which reminds me. I'm going to post on the website to affirmatively mention that people should trust the pictures that reviewers posted over the one the website posted.

I do have blue-greens and turquoises in this bathroom, but the shower curtain dominates and I needed it to lean blue for it all to work
comment in response to post
I lucked out a bit—I made a gamble that the shower curtain was primarily blue instead of primarily green, which turned out to be correct. The picture the website posted looked green, but the pictures that owners of the shower curtain posted all looked blue & I had a hunch they were more accurate

You are missing the point. Protesting is fine. It can bring awareness to citizens. But when you start vandalizing property, you lose their sympathy rather than gain it. Standing your ground at the lunch counter is not the same as vandalizing businesses along your protest route
comment in response to post
The tide turns against protesters when they move from being peaceful to vandalizing property or disrupting vital services to citizens (those highway blocking protests, for example).
