That is Fr. Scott Santarosa, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in SD, whose parish operates a migrant ministry. He was named as a point of contact in a letter from Bishop Pham earlier (see below)

have you considered that he thinks it would be good for his legacy?

NY Rangers (NHL), named so after their founder Tex Rickard, i.e. Tex's Rangers in reference to the Texas Rangers. I'd say that counts.

Awesome! Both look great, to be added to the (ever growing) list of to-be-reads. Thanks

Ah thanks! Way outside the field but was reading w/ interest, and I was confused by your references to megafauna extinction given the quoted post — this explains it! Cheers

Best book you’ve read in the last 12 months?

For those not in the loop, can you provide a bit of context regarding this? Sounds super interesting and I’d love to read more.

Make sure to check out the Computer History Museum in mountain view — well worth a visit!

if you have a small number (in this case, one) of synthetic skies from which you can create your training data. I'm interested in seeing if some type of patch-based model could work, given the small training data. But that is a project for another time!

The main problem I am interested in, in order to have these generative models be really useful in analysis pipelines, is the issue of scaling up the image size, which the authors of the first linked paper point out as a challenge going forward. Hard bc larger images -> smaller training set... 1/2

Definitely agree with these points. There's a real sense in which this *is* just a way to efficiently scale up mocks — but that is extremely useful! It's certainly an improvement over the way that EG foregrounds are currently treated which is somewhat rudimentary (but gets the job done).

These researchers have used machine learning techniques to produce accurate and realistic images of "foreground", i.e. things that get in the way when we try to observe the cosmic microwave background. With these realistic images, it may be easier to remove these foregrounds and improve measurements

This type of field-level modelling might be very important for reconstructing the gravitational lensing of the CMB (see e.g. arxiv.org/abs/2502.20801), which is itself important, among other things, for the detection of primordial B-modes — a smoking gun of inflationary physics.

I've pretty universally heard (online), from people who have worked in congressional offices before, that they do pay attention to phone calls and it is something that can influence votes. Of course, any single phone call is probably negligible, but if a lot of people are calling...

Israel Defense Minister Israel Katz declares a special state of emergency in the home front throughout the entire State of Israel:
“Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected.”

And if that amount of energy was emitted as visible light, that first event would have been bright enough in the night sky that you could have momentarily read a newspaper headline despite the source being a billion lightyears away

this is all to say, the goal for a *community* online does not need to be infinite growth, but people come to think that because most online spaces they are used to are businesses and products first, not communities

Like, I certainly came of age in the era of social media, but my most formative online experiences were as a part of a forum for a space flight simulator i was into as a kid. active on the forum, active in the IRC, and enjoyed it way more than most social media use since then.
