His mason was Christopher Kempster, who came from Burford in Oxfordshire (not far from our Witney office!) and whose memorial can be seen in the church. Having avoided any substantial damage in the Second World War and survived over many centuries,

We also had to ascend one of the hairiest ladder access’s to get to the top of the tower, but it was worth it!
The church is one of 107 that existed in the square mile before the Great Fire of 1666. It was destroyed by the Fire and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren.

The highlight for us was discovering that the four main corner posts of the roof are literally tree trunks from the late 1670s, chosen for their natural "Y" split to support the main roof beam blades above. They were cut square further down but otherwise left unaltered – amazing!
