FWIW, NIH had already silently barred Harvard and four other schools from receiving funds — and agency staff were forbidden from telling applicants and grantees about it.

Important: DOGE is not engaging in innovation - instead their plan is to cut NIH funding though gutting capacity and red tape, e.g.:
*Ban postings on the federal register
*Fire procurement, leadership and grant staff who keep grants moving
*Internal credit card restrictions on spending

You can see how the Trump strategy is working: less NIH money is going out the door, not because there are not worthy projects, but they are blocking spending. Could be $20 billion unspent, which GOP will present as a "savings" (h/t @jeremymberg.bsky.social)

Two takeaways from this piece:
*GOP members of Congress would much prefer to say they are voting for "savings" than for cutting cancer research.
*It is important to fight Trump's slowrolling of NIH spending now. By the time we get to rescission and reconciliation it may be too late.

What can you do? Make noise.
The ask is “Leave NIH funding at last year’s (FY24) level. No DOGE cuts. No recission to codify cuts. Hands off NIH.”
If they are going to vote to cut cancer research, lets make that clear.

Final point here: this post is from an anonymous NIH employee, and it feels critical to raise these voices precisely because the Trump administration has silenced credible NIH officials and their leadership is not representing them.
