1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

Kriddie, after defending over a week ago, has a new paper out in WRR: "Carbon Emissions From Low-Order Streams in a Tropical, High-Elevation, Peatland Ecosystem Are Mediated by Catchment Morphology". Check it out! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Today was the first field day in my ERC ARIMETH project! I installed a oxygen and water level sensor in Krycklan. It was a great field day, wearing t-shirt, sunny... But this is so wrong. Mid-april in northern Sweden means a thick snow cover, but this has been an abnormally warm and dry winter.

I had the pleasure to follow along Kriddie's PhD from the distance, and her work on carbon cycling in high altitude tropical streams. Now she's Dr. Kriddie!

Looking the get the most out of your stream CO2 data? Check out the coupled O2-CO2 model developed by Jake Diamond and me, out today in JGRB! The model extends the single-station O2 model by coupling DIC mass balance and carbonate buffering. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

eartharxiv.org/repository/v... Can we develop a global #deeplearning #model for daily Soil CO2 efflux? Results show - #LSTM models can use existing data to generate synthetic data for temperate mesic regions - challenges of transferring relationships learned from data-rich to data-poor sites

Hydrology Paper of the Day @smanderson.bsky.social on climate change in coastal wetlands: how tree species are affected by salinity pulses due to saltwater intrusion; species-specific responses and impacts; leaf spectral reflectance changes related to NDVI and PRI; and greenhouse experiments.

OK, #causalinference #ecology folk - my paper with the even excellent @lauradee.bsky.social on causal inference with observational data is now out in Ecology Letters! 🌍🧪🌊 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Do you work on lakes globally? Check out what is, to my mind, the most complete global database of lakes (~6M) and associated attributes, newly published in WRR. Also the basis for SWOT lake data. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Happy International Women's Day! Despite the efforts, while much more women enter scientific fields, due to numerous factors, few manage to remain in the field or secure senior positions. Support your coworkers, call out harmful systemic behaviour. 😘

We are hiring a postdoc at Umeå University in aquatic ecosystem ecology. See the link for details! www.umu.se/en/work-with... @grocherros.bsky.social

Your model is your hypothesis. So, why not use multiple of them? Championed by Feldbauer & Mesman, in our fresh-off-the-press paper we highlight the performance of temperature models across the globe, and discuss the path forward to get better projections! hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/...

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

Interesting article by Yi and others: "Principles for guiding future research on resilience and tipping points" iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

I'm starting to build DIY CO2+CH4 measurement devices and I came across this kind of neat air-water equilibrator, EQSphere. Anyone heard of this before and has experience with it? eqsphere.com

A friend of mine has a personal contact with Alabama representatives and will send a personal message regarding #NIH #indirect funding cuts. She is looking for personal stories of the effects of science funding cuts on individual people, particularly if they are in Alabama! Share, I'll pass them.

Position still open for applications. If computational skills are low but creativity is high, you're still encouraged to apply!

Analysis of the confined crowds at the San Fermín festival in Spain shows that dense crowds can self-organize into macroscopic chiral oscillators, coordinating the orbital motion of hundreds of individuals without external guidance, according to a paper in Nature. https://go.nature.com/3WKkb8r 🧪

A postdoc opening at Umeå University! The assessment of long-term Fennoscandian monitoring data to predict future trajectories of northern lake productivity umustipendie.varbi.com/en/what:job/...

This is not business as usual. It’s not just a change in funding priorities going forward; it is the reneging on funding agreements and is profoundly disruptive for even those grants that will be found to be compliant. Meanwhile, trainees who often live paycheck to paycheck are going unpaid.

My drawing below illustrates the importance of spatial ecology for stability: if we ignore space, it's like everyone dancing on the tip of a pin. When space is included (and complex dynamics, too), diversity is easily sustained.

Interested in headwater streams? Headwaters make up 77% of global river networks, but have fewer gauges, less accurate models and lesser protections than large rivers. See our review led by @goldenwater.bsky.social at www.nature.com/articles/s44...

"Abrupt transformation of west Greenland lakes following compound climate extremes associated with atmospheric rivers". This new article in PNAS by Jasmine Saros and colleague Vendy Hazuková is pretty striking www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

Today is the one-year anniversary of finishing my recent @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social paper's final draft 📝. It is also my son's 1st birthday 🐣. Seems like a good time for an explainer thread! (1/n) @archaeal.bsky.social @quendi.bsky.social @sarilog.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We have a new paper out! During my stay in Blanes, Susana Bernal led this great work: "Expanding towards contraction: the alternation of floods and droughts as a fundamental component in river ecology", now published in Biogeochemistry link.springer.com/article/10.1...

I won't come here empty-handed. Our paper “Sensitivity-Constrained Fourier Neural Operators for Forward and Inverse Problems” has been accepted into ICLR 2025 main, a premier AI conference. Stay tuned for the paper --- will make some minimum edits for the camera-ready version!

As of January 1st, Stress Response Modeling at IceLab has officially welcomed @grocherros.bsky.social as a new Assistant professor! Read more about Gerard: www.umu.se/en/feature/r... #complexsystems #ecology #environmentalscience #climatechange #carbonflows

I'm hiring, two fully funded PhD positions! Come work in Umeå in Arctic Sweden, a leading place for high-latitude ecosystem ecology and carbon biogeochemistry

Check out our new paper where we zoom in to the boreal forests to investigate aboveground and belowground trait coordination across a large number of species. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A study of 2.9 million rivers worldwide reveals large shifts in global river flow patterns over the past 30 years. The results emphasize the critical yet changing role of upstream rivers in flood dynamics and the far-reaching consequences for both natural and human systems.

The sun barely peeks above the horizon in the winter solstice in Umeå - but we still have homegrown tomatoes at latitude 63!

In January I'm starting as an Assistant Professor in Ecosystem Ecology, and will be part of @icelabumu.bsky.social ! IceLab is an interdisciplinary center with an open and stimulating environment, and being there is my dream job. Now we are starting a research school with multiple PhDs available 👇

Daily streamflow from 1984 to 2018 in approximately 2.9 million rivers globally. 👉 The numbers set the play! More flow upstream and less flow downstream. 👉 The title says it all! Incredible dataset on the hydrosphere awaiting to be crossed with biosphere data! 🧪🌐🌍 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Closing out our #AGU24, Zoë Dietrich @woodwellclimate.bsky.social presented results from the autonomous monitoring chambers she builds to measure methane and carbon dioxide in #Arctic ponds and wetlands! Read more background here: www.woodwellclimate.org/zoe-dietrich... B51D - Convention Center A

I presented my #AGU24 talk this morning and wanted to summarize my take homes. 20 yrs ago I created the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) to experimentally push hydrology into wetter and drier modes. CO2 emissions are remarkable stable while CH4 is very high with flooding. 1/

There are about 27,000 scientists at #AGU24, and about half of them work on climate one way or another. Whenever I walk into a room like this, I always take a moment to take it all in—all these people dedicated their lives to working on some of our toughest problems. That gives me strength.

I am soon recruiting two PhDs and a postdoc, to work on carbon, methane, metabolism in arctic stream networks. Glad to chat potential opportunities during #AGU24 @agu.org ! There is also soon another postdoc position on oxygen responses to peatland restoration with @ryansponseller.bsky.social ⬇️

Christina Schädel of @permafrostpathways.bsky.social @woodwellclimate.bsky.social talks about how the Permafrost Carbon Network, which she co-led, uses existing data to develop regional and pan-Arctic summaries of permafrost carbon. #AGU2024🧪 Watch the full doc here: www.permafrostcarbon-aware.org

Yuanhe Yang summarizes what we know about thawing permafrost across the Tibetan Plateau. This is the largest area of alpine permafrost in the world and is experiencing rapid thaw and erosion. PCN meeting #AGU2024
