People like Starmer and his gang haven't made their careers by rocking boats. They will bow to power and bide their time in the hope that the worst will bypass them. That's how they become complicit.
comment in response to post
Yes, they do because it's the only way for them to protect their wealth and acquire more. The demographic shift might lead to a government that taxes them, stops fossil fuels, and expands people's rights. Republicans think they're entitled to rule by diktat if needs be.

Of course they claim that they will stay the course. It's a shakedown. They'll make individual deals which will extort favours, privileges, and anything Agent Orange fancies for himself and his loyal minions.

What I find annoying is all these journalists writing about the issue without checking what French law actually says. In France, embezzlement of public money by elected officials leads to being barred from standing for office for five years. There's nothing "political" about her sentence.

Neither of them has friends. They have temporary allies.

Well, they're trying to tap into the same funding as Reform. Climate change denial, racism, misogyny, and authoritarianism go hand in hand. Mrs Badenoch seems to be blissfully unaware that she's treading a dangerous path.

I think Ionesco's Rhinoceros should be on the stage/screen more often.

He's rolling the lawn for a complete U-turn in US policy, of which Vance's speech in Munich was a first step: he is trying to sell his MAGA cult the EU as enemy and Putin as an ally. Fact-checking is useless as far as Trump is concerned: his followers will believe what he tells them.

Subservience to the US doesn't look like a bride to me, rather like a bridgehead. Maybe de Gaulle was right after all...
comment in response to post
I've heard this nonsense about deregulation for decades. What is it that businesses want to do which would break current laws? Why should we let them?
comment in response to post
One of Vance's statements was correct: the US and Europe no longer share the same values. Everything else was lies and distortions aimed at intimidating what once were allies. America First is quickly turning into America Alone.

Evidence is irrelevant. Trumpists believe what the capo tells them.

Because they never had any ideas as to what to do with the power they got. They just thought of themselves as more competent managers but never questioned the dominant paradigm. They quite clearly are also unable to learn from the experience of their brethren in other countries.

Why negotiate with a man who breaks any agreement when it suits him?

comment in response to post
I don't think it's any different from other countries. Everywhere the rich are extracting wealth and their media are telling voters that the problem are those born somewhere else and those in need of public assistance. People believe it, hoping that there will be more for themselves. They need hope.

We'll see more preemptive obedience, not just from private businesses but also from universities. Their top managers will claim that they are protecting the institutions they represent, but first and foremost, they are protecting their own sinecures. That's the only principle they have.

Audaces fortuna iuvat... Unfortunately, the Labour party doesn't seem to have any courage. They've sold it to Alli and other donors.

Why should they re-engage? I thought Britain wanted to bestride the globe alone? Every time the EU makes a suggestion, he doesn't want to know because he's afraid of the Heil...

But that's the problem. Trump is US capitalism in defence. They seem to labour under the impression that protectionism and bullying will restore their fortunes. Expect the bullying to increase...

NAFTA has been replaced by USMCA, a free trade deal Trump negotiated. What he's doing amounts to a breach of that agreement. It would be dangerous to give in to his demands as he will only demand more.
comment in response to post
I think the more important issue is that by imposing these tariffs, Trump is tearing up a trade agreement his first administration negotiated. He is making clear that he will not be bound by any agreement. Concessions will only embolden him.

If the BBC's Nick Robinson and Chris Mason had been around in the 1930s they would have been saying something on the lines of, "Hitler has been using exaggerated rhetoric, but we have to acknowledge that ordinary Germans are concerned by the Jewish question."

Actually, I wonder what the students would say if they realised that a part of their fees is being used to get rid of the people who are supposed to teach them.

In the 90s, the VC of LJMU wrote in a column for the THES that universities should be run by a cadre of managers and administrators, and hire in academic labour as and when required. That seems to be the strategy espoused by the current crop of VCs.

Karl Deutsch defines a nation as a group of people with a mistaken view of the past and a common hatred of their neighbours.
