Pretend human and own worst enemy. What am I doing here? Where is this? Do I really need to share my opinion on anything? Why should anyone care? Ignore the creature behind the curtain!!! Do not perceive!

…this letter accurately depicts how I accidentally ruined my childhood entomology collection. I had spent my Christmas money on proper pins and had made my own specimen boards from an old knife case and some cork. I couldn’t buy the softening chemicals so all my bugs were in awkward positions

I assume the patient was at least on supplemental oxygen too. I am horrified trying to imagine the condition of apples that have been injected straight from the horse paste applicator. It would not be subtle and the dosage would, well, it would lead to a lot of shit

Bless those who make clear repair videos with parts kits linked in the description— for they save us all who wield wrenches and swears at our appliances

Hug. There's no reason to be either of those. Just try to hydrate and eat what sounds palatable

Sure. It’s mostly that I don’t have the information organized in my head in any systematic way so you asking questions will probably work best

…have you ever tried to read a newspaper from like 1910’s? It’s basically trying to parse similar things that clearly everyone of the time took for granted but you really wish someone would have annotated just once… somewhere… but no one did

What do you want to know? I was always simultaneously astounded at what people thought to save and dismayed at what they didn’t.

I can tell you personal experience as someone who worked for over 14 years in a small local history museum about what ended up saved and what was maddeningly missing. I can't think of a resource that discusses it in useful detail though.

Please do, he’s more likely to know the navy specific stuff than this humble researcher who grew up around a shipyard and commercial fishing

Now that I’m thinking about it I think salvaged ships might require a renaming but it may just be that they usually change owners at that point (non-naval ships)

In the Navy? There might be. I know that doesn’t hold for a lot of others though I don’t think fishermen would be too keen on doing so without a lot of superstitions to ward off problems

I think it’s generally ok if a ship gets reclassified and a significant amount of retrofitting and upgrades are done— so it’s like giving it a new life ((there may be some unofficial (but still required) ceremonies that have to be done to make sure the old ship doesn’t ‘haunt’ the new one))

I THINK when a ship is christened it’s believed to impart it with a kind of soul or being and so to rename it is like as big an insult as dead naming but impacting the safety and luck of all aboard her as well
