I would think that we would need the results of an assessment that is completely independent of the US Government at this point.
Donnie and Tulsi are equally worthless when it comes to telling the truth.

Amazing what not being held responsible for breaking the laws of this country will do to embolden a man. He already knows that there will be no accountability for his actions. The Signal scandal proved it to him.

Wow. Dark but appreciated for the deft melding of weather and geopolitics.

This article has lived in my mind since the first time I read it.
Incredible writing.

Really hammers home the sharp line between luxury and terror in our modern world.
Nothing like kicking back in your seat sipping a drink while watching ballistic missiles head out on their way to smash a city.

And whoa daddy, are the locals of Cape Cod feeling it. The loss of Canadian tourism is already markedly noticeable even in mid-June.

Too many Americans, “Yeah I don’t worry about the NWS cuts, I get my weather from that one guy on YouTube”

I am not a meteorologist but I know damn well that there are nuances in every region that influence the forecast. “Central location” is bullshit that does not work very well in the real world.
I might be preaching to the choir here but it feels good to yell anyway.

This is so well written, so deep and clear with its insights, I feel privileged to just have the opportunity to read it. Diamonds of truth embedded in a substrate of gold writing.

Peace to you my friend. It is nice to find a kindred spirit out there on this wild ride.

Very cool. Thank you for this. I have not seen his work before.
I have been a big fan of this concept for years - to the point of accepting that people just think I am nuts with letting things grow on the lawn.
Crushing to see my fears materialize this quickly though.

Thanks for the tip. I will check that one out. I worry enough now about silent tipping points being crossed but I could always use a little more convincing as to the true extent of our madness!

This year has been hard in Massachusetts. Rhododendron bushes in full bloom have no more than a handful of bees.
The clover flowers in the lawn are empty. Every day I wonder if it will be the day that they return and things will be normal.
Every day I think of Rachel Carson “Silent Spring”

The value of a functional emergency management unit of the government on full display. Well done to them.
This American is quite envious.

The similarities between our collective inaction on global warming and AI are remarkable. With both, a wealthy handful get richer while the masses suffer catastrophic consequences.

It saddens me to see just how much they are leaving on the table every day. They should be having a field day screaming about the incompetence of this admin. Alas, far too many are still stuck on the “I’m fighting for you” message.

My uncle getting arrested for a “Salt and Battery” left me wondering why they would ever pick such a name to describe a fight. What in the world did salt and a battery have to do with it?

I get worried that there are a good number of people that think “I don’t care about what happens to the NWS because I get my weather from my YouTube guy” - simplistic I know, but many folks have no idea of how important the NWS is to them every day.

Of course he is not. Despite there being no big red banner on his screen telling his viewers to support the NWS because without their data, he is useless. This infuriates me. Don’t ape the pros when the pros need all of us in their corner. This is not the time for half ass imitations. Rant over.

As a layperson, I can definitely say that the Y’all Watch crosses the line between a knowledgeable amateur and someone who is trying to be a one man NWS. There is simply no need for it. It will only serve to confuse people and also to lead them to think that he is somehow independent of the NWS.

This is such a great point. The more I think of it, the more it can be broadly applied to many of our issues.
People don’t freak out about the NWS being gutted because they have no mental connection to the NWS being the very source of the answer to “What’s it supposed to be like today”

If they all stick to the plan, there is no more concern about polls ever. They will soon own the whole thing by virtue of being in power. We will end up with: Elections - gone. Judicial oversight - gone. Opposing party - prosecuted. Enforcement - funded and growing.
Hope I am wrong.
comment in response to

I would personally like the article to state the truth in that the vast majority of ground level ozone is a byproduct of our burning of fossil fuels which contain the hydrocarbons that react with sunlight to form the gas. This was a little misleading for me.

Great things you and your colleagues do for all of us, every day. So much so that we take it for granted. We run around like knowing what the weather will be today is some god-given thing that magically appears on our phone.
Maddening.

And when I think of the technological leaps that have taken place with military aircraft radars and how active electronic scanned arrays are now the norm, I can’t help but wish that the NWS had similar leading edge radar capabilities as well.
comment in response to

I went to a SkyWarn spotter class 20 years ago and when they explained how they have to choose to scan slices of a storm and wait for the scan to complete, I came away with a new respect for how hard it is to spot a developing tornado.
comment in response to

I can only imagine how much better radar data we “could” have if the NWS had electronically scanned arrays instead of the ancient mechanical ones. Literally life saving technology that we could have.
