In 2024, wildfire carbon emissions from high northern latitudes registered sixth highest in the 22-year satellite record. Wildfire carbon emissions from the sub-Arctic and Arctic regions reached an estimated 151 million tonnes. #ESOTC2024 #C3S🔥 bit.ly/3XWrOJw

The Rules Committee meets at 1 AM on Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning to ram through this disastrous bill. Why? Because they don't want you to see them ripping healthcare from millions of Americans. You do not hold a hearing for a bill at 1 AM unless you're completely ashamed of it.

Thank you @permafrostpathways.bsky.social ! I am very excited that this special issue is out there with articles from RedFire, Community Wildfire Protection Plans from AVF, articles on the Wildland Fire Initiative, the upcoming Expert Group, just a ton of great contributors here.

"Chik'iidruu" in Gwich'in. It's also the name of a caribou clavicle and a tool that's used for hunting rabbits. Nice picture.

Quote with a Pic of the airplane you'll accept as a bribe.

Excited to be the Mountainfilm 2025 mural artist in Telluride! My mural, "Cartographies of Arctic Change" (a massive 26.5' x 36'!), visualizes our Arctic research. It's going up now on Telco Coffee, a wall previously graced by JR, Gregg Deal, Banksy, and more. Come see it in Telluride!

If the Democrats remove @davidhogg.bsky.social from the party he should make a 3rd party. I would donate. The NEA @neatoday.bsky.social should become members enmasse. The Democratic Party is so entrenched with leadership that doesn't want to do the right thing: Universal Healthcare, minimum wage, etc

“Let’s be ambitious enough to work together on wildland fire outside of the initiative in a real way.” Congratulations, Edward Alexander, whose term as Head of Delegation for Gwich'in Council International to the Arctic Council concludes this week. Honestly? The $400M plane from Qatar is quaint compared to his crypto scam, memecoin con, insider trading, and tariff shakedowns.

Article I, Section 9, Clause 8: “no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

Those who spent the last 5 years howling about Hunter Biden being on the board of a Ukrainian company on the grounds that he would not have been granted that position if Ukraine did not want to influence Joe Biden now say they believe the Qataris just want Trump to have nice things for no reason

The Democrats should form "The States Rights Alliance." That would be awesome. The Bill Aspen Society (B.A. society) all as turn on Republican games from the last century.

Devastating data disruptions for #Alaska & the #Arctic. With no advance notice: "Effective May 5, 2025, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS)." #NOAA #SeaIce #Snow

"The risks Arctic fires pose on local ecosystems and the communities that depend on them, as well as the destabilizing effect they can have on the global climate, require a rethinking of how fires will be managed in the future." Powerful StoryMap from @gwandaii.bsky.social @gridarendal.bsky.social

We were founded 40 years ago to bring science to the decision-making table. Recent events - from extreme weather to extreme policy - have made our work more important than ever. With your help, we can do it for the next 40. We’re standing strong. Stand with us. bit.ly/3GlaQ1v

Wildland fire in the Arctic is changing rapidly. With half the state of Alaska lacking snow cover and experiencing deep drying, fuels are prepped, if the early spring produces some lightning, for fire. We could be off to the races to add another red stripe, maybe a much longer one than we've seen.

Reminds me of the David Bowie song "I am afraid of Americans."

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate. The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

Tesla is down 71%, but I'll celebrate when it's down 100% and Musk is completely bankrupt.

The annual Alaska Spring River Break-up webinar will be tomorrow 11am-Noon AKDT. Kyle Van Peursem (NWS) and I will review current conditions and potential risks as Alaska’s big rivers transition from ice to open water. Sunday afternoon was not the best upper air observation cycle for Alaska. "X" are places that would normally have had weather balloon launches three months ago. #akwx #weather #NOAA @climatologist49.bsky.social @coweatherman.bsky.social @brunota2003.bsky.social

The shift on climate change will drastically limit U.S.-based research into its health effects, which tries to answer questions like whether events like wildfires and heat waves can affect cardiovascular health and pregnancy. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/w...

“Climate change doesn’t care if you believe in it. It is here, it is accelerating, and the impacts are already quite dramatic.” www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/13/m...

Sending anyone from this country to a foreign gulag, particularly without a court hearing, should rightfully end a presidency. Full stop.

January-March 2025 temperature departure from normal in the Arctic. It was the second warmest January-March period on record north of 60°N (2016). @alaskawx.bsky.social

Heard Island and McDonald Islands have seen a dramatic warming since 1940. The penguins there have enough to deal with even without the 10% tariffs just imposed on them.

March temperatures around the Arctic were above the 1991-2020 average, but with significant areas in the Canadian Arctic and eastern Siberia below average. Mildest relative to normal in the Canadian Arctic Islands and Baffin Bay. Data from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. #akwx #Arctic #Climate

Worst two-day stock market crashes in the U.S. by percentage loss: 1. 1929 (the Great Depression) 2. 1987 (Black Monday) 3. 2008 (the Great Recession) 4. YESTERDAY AND TODAY And while this happened, the man responsible for it was golfing and dining with enemies of America.

Self forming snowballs in Fort Yukon, Alaska. Rolling in the wind.

Exciting news: Alaska’s Changing Wildfire Environment 2.0 from the Alaska Fire Science Consortium is now online. The report is full of updated information on many aspects of wildfire and wildfire management in Alaska. Available online and as a pdf. #akwx #Alaska #wildfire www.frames.gov/afsc/ACWE

“Science in Woods Hole is most definitely under threat,” said Max Holmes, president and CEO of Woodwell Climate Research Center.

Remember when Tulsi Gabbard fired 100+ intelligence officers over messages in a chat? Now, she’s defending Trump officials who used Signal to plan military strikes. Funny how ‘security violations’ only seem to matter when it’s convenient.

The temperature at the Fairbanks, Alaska airport failed to reach -40F/C this past winter. This used to be a rare occurrence, but has now happened four times in the past decade. The typical number of -40F/C days per winter has dropped dramatically in the past 96 years. #akwx #ClimateChange
