And it's even more screwed up because despite how he may care for doppio, it's in part BECAUSE doppio acts as a mask for fiavolo to stay hidden and in control. If doppio started acting completely against diavolo. Diavolo would probably try to find a way to kill him.

he just wants somebody to emotionally connect to. That's what makes the line heartbreaking, because despite how much he tried throughout the book and how hopeful he seemed near the end with phoebe, this still implies that he believes that being open to others will just lead to more emotional pain.
