Oh, wait, I forgot, LotR was written before fantasy novels were "woke". I retract my statement that anything written by Tolkien could ever be interpreted as political or social commentary.
comment in response to post
If he were alive today, Tolkien would approve of your interpretation, but also be appalled that your interpretation is applicable.

(But not quite as rage-inducing for me as "conservatives don't have agency")

I can't say for sure that the "this is a distraction" people and the "don't give bad people a platform" people are exactly the same people, but they're both incredibly stupid takes with as much basis in reality as "Ivermectin cures COVID".

Glad you are prepared! See you this weekend, maybe.

FFS, TACO. If you had any spine, you'd declare Musk's citizenship application to be fraudulent and deport him.

If I were to bet, my money would be on "the bet is rigged because the organizers plan to declare Trump the Second Coming".

My educated guess is that most of the carbon emissions are pre-consumer. While plastics can off-gas, they're mostly pretty chemically stable, which is why they're sometimes candidates for recycling & also why microplastics are a concern.
comment in response to post
Those numbers seem really high.
comment in response to post
CO2 emissions from transportation is a lot worse than plastics. It's still a good idea to reduce our plastic consumption, especially single-use plastics (as long as we don't switch to worse alternatives!), but I definitely would not make it a top priority.

Did a real human actually utter these words? Was this quote from actual, human speech?

Is it even meaningful to leave one LIGO detector on?

Unless I missed something, that analysis neglected air resistance, which should be orders of magnitude more significant! (This analysis brought to you with exactly the same level of seriousness as the article, in case anyone wants to tell me I missed the point.)

Why is our government focusing on Canadian farms when there's still so much left to ruin in the US?

Trump doesn't have the spine to go up against anyone who can fight back.

He made exactly as good of an argument as I thought he would.
comment in response to post
That's what Katie Miller said.

You cut it off too soon! I was so looking forward to the rest of his compelling, articulate arguments!

Civility is fine, as long as it's understood that bigotry is always the antithesis of civility.

He isn't necessarily an expert, but he definitely has more knowledge than, say, me, so I think it's completely fair to say he knows exactly what he's doing.
comment in response to post
To be fair, crocodile tastes a lot like chicken.

You monster! Actually, the main reason this display is useful for me, the shopper (as opposed to the store, which may have conflicting interests) is because I have no idea which aisle has each of these items because they switched them Tuesday.

I believe it's properly spelled "billet coup bird", which obviously means a bird that cuts tickets.

Is it bad that I read that in Ralph Wiggum's voice?

"Give me my helmet and get in the sidecar, Keanu!"

That makes you one step above the least qualified person on the planet to be making comments like that. But you're obviously and verifiably wrong about what the recommendations are, along with everything else about what's going on here, and you owe people an apology for spouting off ignorance.
comment in response to post
I'm guessing you're not a medical doctor, because what you are saying is contrary to what the actual recommendations are.

The US is probably more scientifically literate now than it ever has been. Science literacy has never been high, but because of the internet: 1) The haters have become a lot better organized than the literate 2) Others has become a lot more literate, throwing the haters into much starker contrast
comment in response to post
It always has been. The haters have just become a lot better organized than the non-haters.

Actions speak louder than words, and yours say, "I'm happy that oppressors around the world, especially Netanyahu, have the most enthusiastic advocate possible in the White House".
comment in response to post
If you gave a shit about anyone other than yourself, you'd do something that actually makes the world a better place. But the world is a worse place because of your choices, especially for the babies in Gaza, because of you, because you don't actually care anything about them.
comment in response to post
People like you are the reason why fascists have power. You don't believe a word of this, you just get a thrill from your holier-than-thou attitude, but never actually lift a finger to genuinely help another human.
comment in response to post
If people don't want to be called insanely stupid by the whole world, they shouldn't attack the whole world with insane stupidity.

Ah yes. I remember my feelings of shock and confusion when Halford came out of the closet. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Were we, the hordes of metal fans, really supposed to believe and accept that he was ever in the closet?
comment in response to post
Exactly.

Trump doesn't like Bruce Springsteen, apparently.

I assumed as much.

It may take me longer to finish this. I intended it to be a reasonable-length folksy ballad, but it turns out the song wants to be more of a prog rock opera. A "prockpera", if you will.
