"What movie traumatized you as a child" All of them. It was 1985, there were no non-traumatic movies to watch as a child

First podcast recording of the day. Guest is Dr. Tory Hendry of Cornell University, chatting about interactions between fluorescent Pseudomonas and aphids!

Just got news that @hhmi.org decided to not review Hanna Gray fellowship applications. I am sorry but that’s fucked up. People spent months working in those. So now you disadvantaged these candidates even more. They could have used the time to advance their research instead.

Here's one to add to your Friday reading list! 🚨Just in press in J. Mol. Biol.🚨: a beautiful review on the structures, mechanisms, regulation, and open questions of aminoacyl-tRNA-protein transferases by Misti and Rajat who work on amino acid transferases! Read the paper here: tinyurl.com/mr386wsn

This should be included in the lawsuits. Blatant discrimination is occurring.

Please share this letter written in collaboration with other NOAA Davidson Fellows. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a precious resource which directly benefits coastal communities. Projected budget cuts would destroy this system - please don't let it die in silence!

Hey y'all! My department is conducting a search for an assistant or associate professor in bacteriology. It's pretty broadly defined. If you know anyone who's looking for a great department that does awesome science - please send them our way! You can DM me with any questions you have πŸ˜€

It’s been a golden era of outstanding undergraduates in the lab with these three receiving recognition for their Honors Theses today. On to grad school at UW Madison, and Harvard x2. Congratulations @isabellalin.bsky.social and @denniswu02.bsky.social and Michael!

β€œUndermining the future of American science is not a path to accountability β€” it’s a path to decline.” In a powerful new piece, my colleague Daphna Shohamy explains how canceled grants are driving young scientists out of scienceβ€”and out of the country. πŸ”— www.statnews.com/2025/05/07/u...

A really important op-ed from my colleague, Matt Connelly, in our History Department. He sets the record straight on several important facts about Columbia’s response to the Trump administration that have been misreported and mischaracterized. 1/5 www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/o...

In B. subtilis, TerC proteins function in Mn export to support the metalation of exoenzymes. MeeY is also required (directly or indirectly) for production of surfactin, a lipopeptide required for swarming motility! (collab. with Dan Kearns' lab @IU). #MicroSky journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

My lab and Chuck Farah's at the University of SΓ£o Paulo (USP) are seeking a postdoc to join an exciting project focused on applying structural biology to novel and unexplored targets in antibiotic discovery.

The university refused to make changes it said would "dictate what private universities can teach" and "whom they can admit and hire," among other things.

Thrilled and proud to be part of this exciting discovery with the amazing Feaga Lab team! Grateful for everyone’s unwavering support throughout this journey! β€οΈπŸ’™

Latest work from the lab - we identify a translation factor, YebC2, that reduces ribosome stalling in B. subtilis! Congrats to co-first authors: grad students Hye-Rim Hong & Cassidy Prince & undergrad Dennis Wu @denniswu02.bsky.social journals.plos.org/plosgenetics...

0. Vought, Vance, Rufo, and those attacking academia see scientists as bureaucratsβ€”in the most pejorative sense of the termβ€”who they can "put into trauma" and drive to quit. They don't understand that science is not just a job. It's a vocation, literally, in the original sense of *a calling*.

Excited to share this new preprint from the lab, where postdoc Pavan Silva @kptsilva.bsky.social found pathways that control gene amplifications, and thus antibiotic resistance, in Staph aureus! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

My students that are nearing graduation and trying to find jobs right now are the same students who started the lab with me in 2020.

I am a professor at Columbia University. All of the student NIH training grants have been canceled and now there are reports that ALL funding will be frozen. Why are Universities not banding together and speaking out publicly and forcibly about governmental attacks on biomedical research?

doing bacterial genetics rn is rearranging base pairs on the titanic. is this anything
