True! I’ve had times I think it’s terrible, but I put it aside and go back later only to realize it’s better than I thought.

It can definitely be hard to find just the right names!

Hi #MomsWritersClub! I'm Heather, author of historical fiction and mom to an imaginative 7yo daughter. I live in the Washington, DC, suburbs and am gearing up to attend the Historical Novel Society conference virtually over the next several days.

Distractions are a major factor for me, too, especially during the summer when school is out and our schedule changes.

I also have a hard time accepting that it doesn't have to be perfect while drafting.

Yes, the intimidation factor is real!

How exciting to be drafting a new project! Naming characters is so much fun.

I shelved my first book after getting helpful and honest feedback from agents and editors. I realized it was a practice novel. I then went on to write my debut, keeping certain pieces of that initial premise. #MomsWritersClub

Talking with my mentor or a writing peer, reviewing my outlines, and exercising to help clear my head. #MomsWritersClub

Going in the wrong direction with the story or lapsing out of my routine due to other responsibilities. #MomsWritersClub

Yes, many times! Setting deadlines usually helps me push through it, but I've also stepped away to clear my head for a few days when necessary. #MomsWritersClub

When I experience writer's block, it usually means I've gone in the wrong direction with the plot or a character arc. I take some time to review my outlines and rework as needed. #MomsWritersClub

15-minute snippets sound great! And I remember when my daughter was that age! 😊

It's not writing-related, but my husband and I recently celebrated our fifteenth wedding anniversary! #MomsWritersClub

I write 20th-century historical fiction with elements of romance. I see you write mysteries, which I love! My current WIP has a Prohibition-era mystery woven into the storyline.

Everything's been going great so far! The typeset manuscript and cover should be ready to review before too long.

Yeah, maybe a dual narrative POV, which I've yet to try!

Even better that it worked out that way with the love interest!

She was removed from that manuscript. It was too much for the story, and I couldn't do her justice while staying within my word count. I would love to bring those two characters, now both MCs, back together in a future book, though!

I just love it when they walk on unannounced and end up making a name for themselves!

Yes, this one is also true for me! I had an antagonist in one book become a great enemies-to-lovers LI in a subsequent novel. #MomsWritersClub

That's a great idea! I can likely use some of mine as bonuses for my website, newsletter, etc.

For sure! I had an MC in a draft novel as a supporting character, but her story was so complex, and alpha readers liked her so much, that I decided to move her storyline into its own book. #MomsWritersClub

Definitely! The worksheets I use include a lot of these questions, and I like having fun with the exercises. I also like to write letters and journal entries for different characters, even if I don't plan to use them. #MomsWritersClub

I know the MCs pretty well and create detailed outlines for them, but I "pants" the secondary characters to some extent, letting them emerge and develop on the page as I write. #MomsWritersClub
