The best time to Abolish ICE was the Democratic trifecta in 2009 and the second best time would have been the trifecta in 2021 and the third best time should we be so lucky will be a trifecta in 2029 and honestly that feels like the last good shot at it.

I feel like every year of my life there's been a report about some right-winger murdering people for holding different opinions. And, every year of my life, I've heard warnings about left-wingers potentially returning to the political violence they did before I was born.

urban police forces are occupying armies which live outside the urban core and who are responsive to no civilian authority. when the LAPD and LASD opened fire on peaceful protests, it was not because anyone had ordered them to.

THREAD: The assassinations in Minnesota highlight a dirty secret hardly ever mentioned in the news: U.S. has 1.1 million private police officers. There is an unprecedented footprint of privately organized violence that is doing all sorts of things most people have no idea about.

OH GOD

When I die I’d like the @nytimes.com editorial board to lower me into my grave so I can be let down one last time.

Today marks nine years since Jo Cox was assassinated by a far-right extremist, a terrible loss to those who knew and loved her and to politics. Zero lessons were learned though and the far-right continues to be pandered to. With more political assassinations in the US it all feels too familiar.

not to expose myself as insufficiently cynical but I’m actually kind of shocked at how bad this is across multiple levels—as a piece of analysis, as a piece of rhetoric, and as a deployment of the NYT’s outsized power in this specific instance

Turtle Mutual Aid:

if the puzzle and food teams could somehow go independent we might finally see the end of this spineless, detestable rag

NYT Editorial board effectively endorses Andrew Cuomo today in the most weaselly possible way. “Don’t rank Mamdani, and it will probably be either him or Cuomo, sooo…”

He seems to typify the very specifically American combination of grifter, fabulist, and zealot that characterizes the worst of our moment.

Kinda wild that we all get to pay taxes to fund a civil war against us

It is extraordinary, but grimly inevitable, that the people most responsible for hobbling the UK have become the loudest & whiniest critics of the consequences of their own actions. A big part of the process lies in people like ‘Lord’ Hannan actually being *rewarded* for their ignorant delinquency.

i don't know why i find the title so funny

forever thankful to my dad for teaching me the foundational lesson of my entire life: how to troubleshoot

There's a thread on AskReddit asking, "People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened?" 99% of the answers are depressing American stories about medical bills, 1% is an Australian who found a wombat burrowing under their house.

My review of @sgj.bsky.social's 'The Buffalo Hunter Hunter,' is up at @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social. It confronts the haunting specter of American genocide through the vampire tale, charting the depths of trauma & vengeance in the wake of the Marias Massacre. lareviewofbooks.org/article/how-...

A lot of blue mayors and governors know the "don't give an order you don't expect to be obeyed" leadership maxim but interpret it as "I guess I can't order the cops to do anything" rather than as a crisis of insubordination.

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

This rundown of the factors leading to political violence "from all stripes" is one of the worst paragraphs I have ever read.

It's wild too that the press wholly ignores Senators just straight up lying to their constituents. We know exactly who this guy was and that Moreno is just making shit up. Bad enough they don't cover the protests honestly, they can't even report on Congress! That used to be an actual job!

I can genuinely recommend marrying a nerd. Part of my husband's Father's Day present is that we've deliberately taken a route on our day trip that includes a bend on the A1 he loves to hate and he's allowed to give his lecture on it uninterrupted.

i think everyone on the left should more or less aggressively grab on to the legacy of FDR's war liberalism and shove it down the throat of every fascist until they cannot breath

I was going to write an ironic post about human shields but Netanyahu daring to try to take a moral high road when it comes to killing civilians is too absurd on its own already.

To be clear: a guy named Arturo Gamboa pulled out a rifle and charged the crowd, and Arthur Folasa Ah Loo was accidentally shot by volunteers trying to bring down Gamboa. Gamboa has been booked on murder charges. There were also multiple MAGA truck attacks on protesters yesterday.

J.J. Spaun, you magnificent son of a gun!

Man it sucks that every american city is occupied by a heavily armed gang of criminals who can do anything they want with complete legal impunity. Not the way I'd have organized society tbqh

the John Wick universe is what you get if someone explained everything about Vampire: the Masquerade except that the characters are vampires

The Minnesota assassin appears to be a hate-filled right winger. So can we stop walking on eggshells about MAGA's legitimization of political violence? Yes, Republicans have also been the target of inexcusable violence, but this isn't a "both sides" issue. 1/ A🧵on the danger.

🤦🏼‍♀️

Jesus. The juxtaposition of these two posts back to back is just...

law enforcement officials say they made a proactive check at Rep. Hortman's home after a lawmaker who lived nearby was shot and found a "police vehicle in the driveway with emergency lights and what appeared to be a police officer at the door coming out of the house." He was actually the gunman.

It is firmly in the “somebody’s making an active decision to downplay this” territory.

Making a big show of arguing with my gf when she says the dog needs a bath so he doesn't realize I'm controlled opposition

The radicalization of the American right is THE story of US politics over the last four decades and political reporters are still not allowed to talk about it

In other news, Saudi Arabia, which has done as much as anyone to ensure the financial success of Club World Cup for FIFA, has executed a journalist, who was tried in secret, and sentenced to death over what activists say were tweets critical of the regime.

Thank you to my son and his day care for this terrifying Father’s Day gift.

I just got back home to finally sit down and watch the parade footage and it’s 100x more embarrassing than I expected. I totally forgot the weak nations that do these spend decades perfecting them. It looked like if Fyre festival did North Korea.

Lifelong antenna TV weirdo here. There's a new over-the-air broadcast TV standard that adds a lot of nice modern features like support for codecs that are newer than MPEG2, HDR, and expanded range. BUT! Guess what else it comes with? They added DRM to free over-the-air broadcast TV.

feel like the smarmy posts from bluesky devs about who is and isn’t allowed on here are harder to pull off when you let store brand qanon cook boomers brains

My roommate saw me put more cheese onto a frozen pizza & it was like I unlocked something in him. I saw the wheels turning as he realized we don't have to settle for the default amount of cheese the pizza overlords offer us. What goes onto the frozen pizza is in our control. We have the power.

I think a lot of journalists did learn from the 2020 protests on how to properly cover police escalation. It is nice to see mainstream outlets apportioning blame properly

Before the cops in LA started escalating things for no reason it was funny how my main takeaway was how much people were looking out for each other in really helpful ways. I’ve never seen so many people with carts giving away free water, sunscreen, snacks, and masks to total strangers.
