Also there's a lot of subclasses now and they even overlap in responsibilities with other classes' sub classes.
I also think having the same top level classes creates pillars for 3rd party design. A lot of third party splat can just add to these things vs build new classes (even tho folks do that!

Tbh, they tried some of this... As you said in 4E and it didn't really stick. 4E was niche. People were playing 3.5e thru 4Es lifespan. They went back to this style because it's what people wanted.
There's also so much marketing identity around their classes now.
