The non-church options have been systematically defunded by conservatives in the name of "fiscal responsibility." Libraries, rec centers, and access to field space were all readily available when I was young, but that time is long in the past.

The effect of layoffs on morale can't be overestimated. "Hey this person I like and respect just got thrown away like a muffin wrapper, guess it's time to really give this organization my all!", said no one ever.

There's also a bit of survivor's guilt in this situation too. I don't want this shit happening to anyone, but if it happened to me I'd be pissed off and feeling powerless instead of feeling gulity and like I should have done more to prevent this from happening.

I should feel relieved and happy to know that my position is relatively safe. OTOH, being one of the ones left behind when a team gets cut down to a skeleton crew in the wake of budget cuts is never a fun time. Typically you're getting the same pay and absorbing a lot of additional work.
