Today it told me it’d take an 1 hour 18 minutes to go 12 miles. First of all, definitely a sub-optimal route (I did it in 11 miles), secondly, is 9.2 mph realistic even as a progression speed? They’d be better off not even trying.

Awful news, best wishes for his recovery.

I’m a huge supporter of active transportation, but I always view studies skeptically. There’s a whole lot of factors that go into mode selection and it’s very likely that people that people with more chronic health issues are less likely to be able to cycle to work, skewing the data.

Another argument in favor of raised pedestrian crossings!

This treatment is especially needed around the Old Court Metro station, where the roadway is overbuilt and cars speed through. I'm also very pleased to see the presentation materials take note of bus routes and even comment on the lack of crosswalks between bus stop pairs!

You asked for Super Bowl ad ideas, the bike one you play at the end is great and similar to my idea: safe routes to school. Go for nostalgia of kids walking or biking to school contrasted with the hell of suburban school drop-off lines, no sidewalks, exhaust. I don’t have a tagline though :/

Still not sure it changes your first take, though it does explain why they're closing the observation deck. I always liked that space, but haven't been there in years.

I’m 50/50 on this. A lot of time I just toss it in the pannier on the cargo bike because I’m getting only a few groceries and want my hands free. The dry cleaners know me though as I roll up and park the e-bike in the 15-min parking space in front (no bike parking, so I take a car space).

It’s hard to celebrate sneckdown season when the part of the road uncleared is typically the bike lane I was planning to use. Or a sidewalk I see people trying to navigate.

Paved Paradise hits a lot of the same points but in a more mainstream-approachable way and has the advantage of being more recent and can talk about recent advances in ending or reducing parking mandates.

I think the Ravens would still win this if they weren’t allowed to use the forward pass.

So there we have it, the January 2025 York Road Snow Clearance Hall of Shame. It took me longer to make this thread than to ride around taking the pictures, but even though I did 311 reports for each of these, I doubt county enforcement happens. So I figure naming and shaming might help.

I thought I might be done as I biked up the hill, but York Rd businesses finished weak. Carroll Fuels of Lutherville managed to be the third gas station to get all traces of snow cleared from their pumps but carefully avoid clearing their sidewalk for their pedestrian neighbors. Embarrassing.

Almost down, at the top of that hill is Seminary, where I decided to quit. But first, we have to stop and wonder if the owners of Trulieve Cannabis Dispensary are too high to shovel their sidewalk. If they were, how did they manage to clear their parking lot?
comment in response to post
Sigh, this block is rough, 3rd business, 3rd ice-covered sidewalk. Mr. Tire of Lutherville has not complied with Baltimore County Code requirements to clear their sidewalk of ice and snow.

Lutherville Pizza Boli’s and 7-Eleven share a building and an antipathy to their pedestrian customers and neighbors. A 7-Eleven with no gas pumps… guys some of your customers arrive by foot.

This property was one of my inspirations for doing this. Calico, Essence Massage and State Farm Agent Lonzo Warren should figure out why their property manager doesn’t care about their image in the community or compliance with county code. Sidewalks on both York Rd and Bellona need to be cleared!

I want going to find a way to get across the road for this picture, but Legacy Consulting LLC of Lutherville has had several days to shovel their sidewalk, but has failed to do so. They are directly across from 1624 York Rd, so in this section neither side of the road is clear for pedestrians.

Another vacant commercial property making life dangerous for pedestrians. 1624 York Rd has not cleared their sidewalks.

Now the one that’s maybe the worst. This is Heritage Mazda Towson at 1835 York Rd. This @mazdausa.bsky.social dealership is next door to Lutherville Lab Elementary school. Where does Mazda think the families should walk? Do they not worry kids could slip and fall into the roadway?

Another gas station, this time a Citgo. It’s arguable that they might have cleared their sidewalk once, but I snapped this picture because I watched a pedestrian detour to walk thru the gas pump area rather than continue on the sidewalk!

I’ve heard that this Raimondi’s Florist has closed, but again, someone owns this property and still bears responsibility for clearing the snow and ice.

Folks, we’ve finally made it to Ridgely! We’re at the side of the intersection that MDOT SHA saw fit to allow pedestrians to cross at, but the combined powers of Floyd’s Barbershop and T-Mobile were unable to get out here and provide some minimum safety and accommodation for pedestrians.

Commercial Real Estate Services (CRES) of Maryland finishes up the short (3 lots) block from Aylesbury to Northampton with an unbroken streak of not clearing their sidewalks. As I approached on Northampton, I saw a man on a bike risk crossing York Rd here rather than risk this block.

Right past Toohey Appraisals is the European Skin Care Center. They may care for your skin, but only if you arrive by car to their clean and cleared parking lot, because they sure didn’t bother with cleaning the sidewalk.
comment in response to post
Toohey Appraisals at 1835 York Rd clearly doesn’t value their community very highly, otherwise they’d clear the snow and ice from their sidewalk, as required by law.

Just past Pinnacle Real Estate is another sidewalk clearance scofflaw, Dr. Xu’s Acupuncture at 1909 York Rd. Their sign advises us that Dr. Li is back, but they sure didn’t bring a snow shovel with them.
