This year's AWAC Summer Reads is "Writing Expertise: A Research-Based Approach to Writing and Learning Across Disciplines" by Linda Adler-Kassner and Elizabeth Wardle. Join us in Sept. on Zoom to discuss the text with a supportive community of teachers-scholars. Stay tuned for a save-the-date. 1/2

I’m an institutionalist. I get the thinking here. But please: don’t wait to create alternate sources of legitimacy — create the shadow cabinet, even if only to speak to the public. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Don’t wait for permission. www.axios.com/2025/06/11/v...

cats don't obey in advance and no one else should, either

Also culinary schools don’t waste a bunch of time and money on microwaves “because students are going to use them in the real world whether we like it or not”

Exactly this. It had me in tears this morning.

Do you know how much $$ these folx make? Peanuts. I was AmeriCorps for two terms of service and was also scraping to eat and pay bills. There is nothing about this that is for saving $. It’s just evilness at play.

Precisely what I’ve been thinking for the last week.

Was teaching my engineers about slide design (for prep) today and had a series of slides and activity on accessibility. Found myself saying in a spicy tone, “Contrary to what others may say about DEIA, it’s not a bad thing to make sure everyone in the room understands your message and can act on it”

After #Princeton, now #Harvard stands up for what is right. #Rutgers is building a coalition of Big Ten public schools. #UMass-Amherst is working on getting land grant universities united. United we are stronger. One step at a time. #highered #academicsky #commsky

Do we have a constitutional crisis yet? Folx seem to be waiting and waiting, while those in power are making clear they are not going to abide by any of the rules.

Happy to contribute to this! Haven’t shopped at Target since…January?

BREAKING: 36k people showed up in LA for Bernie and AOC’s rally. In the off year. Americans are pissed — and anyone ignoring that is making a big mistake.

The words I have for USDOE would likely get me banned, here.

When we moved to ME 4 yrs ago, I had 3 trips to DMV to get my license. Why? Because 29 yrs ago, I had a license here with a different name. Required birth cert, divorce cert, marriage cert, and passport to document name change. (And it’s not even a Real ID, so I get to go back shortly.)

It’s 2025 and I am in a Zoom session that feels like March 2020 in its implementation/facilitation. I want to scream.

So the Keystone Pipeline, which was rerouted from white suburbs to tribal lands because of the danger of rupture, which a whole bunch of indigenous people got war crimed for for protesting, partly due to the danger of rupture, just ruptured If only someone could have seen this coming

I was concerned about submitting an article because its topic falls on the list of things this govt wants to eliminate. But I decided today that the most radical thing I could do was finish it and put it out for consideration. Screw them. Submitted!

For academics in the US: the University of Toulouse has quickly put together a program to help bring scholars to France whose work is under attack by the Trump administration. The priorities area are: humanities, climate sciences, health, and space research. en.univ-toulouse.fr/news/toulous...

I’m so terrified Kam Man and other shops like this will disappear. They are so important for SO many reasons.

For the Daily Beast this week, I fix everything.

My 13 yo wanted to watch a film together. He chose The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Timely.

This made me cry and it really should not have. It is a document of basic decency. Good for Tufts, may the other institutions grow a spine too. www.tufts.edu/president/sp...

The Egyptian pro-democracy activist Wael Ghonim said, "The power of the people is greater than the people in power." This is a checklist of things you can do, probably should do, resources, ideas, ways to move forward. “I just don’t know what to do!!” shouldn’t be something you say now. Here:

It has been two weeks since a Georgia woman was arrested for her miscarriage, and not one major national outlet has covered the story

This. I’m a GenX woman, which means my early working years were spent battling extreme sexism to just get by. Then it became this:

I don't think much of the higher ed community realizes the extent to which international student enrollment is at risk right now. It seems crazy to think of nearly all international students being banned, but colleges and students need to prepare for that possibility.

It means something to see our leaders do things we know to be hard. I was cynical about this when it started but I’m really moved. Every day brings new damage and it is all going to be incredibly difficult to undo, but we won’t ever finish if we never start.

Gosh, the NRA and all the other groups who said we needed 400 million guns to protect our freedom from government tyranny are AWFULLY quiet about the state illegally arresting, holding, and deporting people without process. A cynical person could argue it was never about laws or freedom...

Lemme tell you, neither do asst profs in the humanities. Or assoc profs. I have multiple advanced degrees and decades of experience, and my income is just $1000/year above the county low-income line.

What leadership looks like.

Exactly. Two of my articles showed up on LibGen. I’m not fussed that they’re there; I despise Zuch for using it to train tech.

All of this.

The administration gets bolder each time a strong institution bends the knee. We saw it in media: The LA Times pulls an endorsement. ABC offers a $15m settlement. The WaPo kills op-eds. Now, higher education: WSJ reports that Columbia is caving. Minutes later, White House puts $175m hit on Penn.

I’m struggling with how calm/“everything is normal” so many people around me are. I’m literally thinking about immediate safety of my family. What are the things keeping you all feeling hopeful we won’t fully fall into a repeat of Hungary or Venezuela in a matter of months??? For real.

“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on @msnbc.com
