If it were of the slightest importance to humankind in any conceivable way, I’d be outraged!

Amusing side note: Rather than simply numbering them, the Australian Electoral Commission names each electorate after a place or a respected figure. Owing to population growth, they’ve created a new seat called Bullwinkel.

The Deer Hunter is a chillingly resonant portrait of the Monongahela Valley Steel towns of the period. I spent my childhood in McKeesport, two towns downriver from Clairton, where TDH is set. The scene at the end where they all start to sing God Bless America still gets me in the gut.

It faces the Johannisplatz near St John the Baptist church. It’s an annual treat. Is it wisteria or lilac? I don’t quite know.

2. For many of us, it may be more comfortable to live as an outsider someplace else, than to live where we were born or raised. Especially if you were an outsider—or even just an oddball—in your native culture. I ain’t German, but I’e woven myself into the social fabric in a comfy, loose-knit way.

1. This is a really important subject. The culture where you spent your formative years shapes you in ways nothing else can. But that doesn’t mean it’s “home”. For example, I feel uncomfortable in the place where I served my childhood, though I understand it deep n my bones. …/2

I see what he’s getting at, and I’m a gay cisgender man. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of people live happy lives without a domestic partner, and I could certainly do so. But in my fave words from Joyce, the little sacraments of everyday life shared with another also have a special quality.

2. My experience? Your 50s are golden. Most of us reach a true mastery of our avocations, and know where to invest our energy make a difference. Your 60s will be even better, because you’ll enjoy an extra dose of DGAF. Your 70s? I’ll let you know when I get there. 😃 is your friend an ex-friend yet?

1. Two healthy sons with a positive outlook. A super husband. A house. A PhD. Book authorships. Countless young minds opened and nurtured as a teacher. Mastery of at least two languages. That you’ve achieved it in ONLY 48 years should earn you a “wow”, not a “yikes”! …/2

I understand that in an Olive Garden, they let you dig olives out of the ground yourself.

Awesome! The LGBTQ version of Coachella is knocking back back three espresso martinis at the Tool Shed in Palm Springs, officially America’s gayest city. I have (straight) friends in Joshua Tree, and love the area. SoCal at its best.

My sister (born USA) is a Beverly. But she lives in a Beverley country (Australia). She corrects the mis-spellings of others with good grace. I would have thought Canada was a Beverley culture?

Steve, in this case, AI is your friend. Since I’m curious about this, too, I had a look and would be happy to share. Ping me with a DM and I can cut and paste for you. Tunnels: from experience, I think the Eurotunnel is strictest, and teh Gothard motorail tunnel more relaxed.
