When I was at university we did handwritten exams, don't students still do this?

So next time there is a massive hurricane, tsunami or flood in the US, who's going to be responsible for the early warning systems? #forecasting #disaster

Let's hope simplification does not mean a reduced focus on sustainability. Agriculture and food security is reliant on ecosystems and biodiversity, and investors with a long term outlook have called for greener CAP reforms several times www.fairr.org/news-events/...

One study found "the average global crop price will increase by about 187% if pollinators go extinct" Could biodiversity loss already be an unseen contributor to the global #costofliving crisis? #foodprices #FoodSecurity #naturerisks www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The trouble is this doesn't just impact on the US. This data is used around the world to track the path of cyclones which lead to major loss of life - not just for US citizens. #forecast #cyclones #disasters #weather

This is really shocking can't believe I had never heard about this until reading about it just now on this thread. And that this is happening in the UK and still hasn't been resolved! :-O #justice @Amnestyuk.bsky.social

Did the authors use Chat GPT to come up with the reasons & answers submitted on this page, as well?

However, it is a sector that quite subsidized - and fish stocks may collapse first. Intensive animal agriculture already uses a large amount of global crops for animal feed, they could just continue to use those crops for animal feed, while millions go hungry.

@elpinchbeck.bsky.social would be really interested to debate this & discuss this with you some time. Globally, a lot hinges on reining in the shift towards meat-heavy diets, not just climate change, but also nature loss.

Arguably a relatively small change in comparison to what's possible, based on existing trends & food innovation. High ambition would have co-benefits like reduced water & waste pollution, lower antibiotic & disease risks & human health benefits. A lot depends on framing. Time to detoxify the debate?

The CCC does recommend a 35% reduction in meat consumption by 2050, and innovation in alternatives or has this advice changed? www.theccc.org.uk/2022/06/13/g...

A shame to see the lower ambition of wording from CCC and @elpinchbeck.bsky.social on this topic - we do need to see transition away from meat-heavy diets to meet climate goals globally as a "business as usual" trajectory makes climate goals impossible to meet... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

These are critical areas not least because food & agriculture is the dominant source of #methane emissions - almost 40% is from agriculture - and methane is vital to stay below 2 degrees.

The interesting analysis by FELD can be found here, and it's notable that in the table above, only one G20 country, the UK, has a reference to sustainable dietary shift, while only the EU has a reference to diversifying protein sources. feldactiontracker.org/analysis-of-...

To note that at #COP26, investors with $12 trillion calling for specific targets for agriculture to be disclosed as a part of countries' NDCs, so there is support by investors for this: www.fairr.org/cop26-invest...

But are there any healthful processed foods that are doing quite well? You could perhaps argue baked beans are an example? Or some fortified cereal (not too bad?) I guess my point was if manufacturers chose to use processing for healthy foods, maybe there wouldn't be such a big problem with UPF?
