P.S. I know whenever I talk about having PTSD, it is natural to wonder what happened. I am happy to share my story, but I prefer to do so in person (over warm beverages).

The number one most recommended book is, The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk I think it is a good read in general for people working in the disaster space. www.ptsdalliance.org has a lot of great resources.

I am speaking up to help reduce stigma and be an advocate and voice for our colleagues who might be suffering in silence. Anyone can develop PTSD at any time or age. Some factors that can increase your chance of developing PTSD are not under your control.

I think it is important to know that there are amazing non-medication-based approaches to dealing with PTSD (I am always happy to talk about my personal experience with EMDR), and early intervention can significantly improve recovery outcomes.

One of the known events that can lead to PTSD are natural disasters. PTSD symptoms can show up immediately, or after a period of time. Whether or not a specific event or experience will lead to PTSD is very individual and not always logical.

This event was seen, photographed and filmed by countless people near to and far from the volcano, making this potentially one of the most famous pyroclastic flows of our time. Access to the summit area of Etna had been closed by routine at the beginning of the activity. (2/2)

I know from speaking with Veterans that it can be hard to talk to civilians about the trauma of serving. So if you can't bring yourself to talk to your loved ones yet, please join our community and talk to us. We are here for you and we know how impossible it can feel <3 www.reddit.com/r/ptsd/

Even if I am sad and miss him today I can't let a good anniversary go to waste! So today I am asking Does anyone have a good archivist contact for OMSI or an old copy of the "heard it" survey!?

In January we lost Dr David Johnston (Massey) a friend and collogue who also loved this eruption and LOVED a good anniversary. Even though it wasn't in the cards for me this year we had talked about going to the anniversary to the volcano and said we were DEFINITELY going to to the 50th.

This is why self assessment is also valid. There are tangible drawbacks to having a formal diagnosis ...
