*loses every swing state in an absolute historic loss to a bumbling fascist regime* well, at least we saved the party from electoral annihilation

I believe Rian Johnson was slated to write the script for episode 9 (for Trevorrow to direct) but due to changes Abrams made on 7 they had to scrap everything and start over. Johnson had to shift all of his focus to 8 while 9 was left completely to Trevorrow.

It’s great. Tragic that they had to scrap Rian Johnson’s script for the third film. Even more tragic that we’re not getting his trilogy. He could’ve been our Star Wars Guy.

You get the most self-involved people in the country caught up in this cycle of navel-gazing. Meanwhile, to the extent that everyone else shares experiences at all, it's things like Top Gun. You appeal to their nostalgia with sequels to Top Gun, while self-described "Gen Xers" talk about grunge.

The best part of this racket, at least for journalists, is scaring older people. You think kids will be kids? Oh, ho, ho think again. These kids are *different*. And woe betide anyone who isn't prepared for what's coming. Read all about it in this week's TIME. Easy money.

If you make money trying to sell a particular kind of consumer on lifestyles and developing a distinct cultural identity, this reality is boring and unhelpful. So you make up narratives. You tell stories about what it means to be their age. How different and new it is to be 20 this time around.

It's very difficult to make meaningful generalizations about everyone who happens to be born within a particular span of time. They're culturally divided by innumerable factors. To the extent that there are broadly shared cultural experiences, they're going to be mass, mainstream experiences.

Generations are absolutely fake, to be clear. Editors, TV producers, and marketers pretend that the experiences of a particular set of middle to upper middle class white people are universal across a given age cohort to generate content for and sell things to those people. That's all it is.

It seems possible that I'll be hearing synth sounds from the Reagan administration and barraged with reboots and knockoffs of 80s IP until I die. I do not think this would be the case if everyone in Gen X had been listening to Daniel Johnston cassettes and watching Linklater films.

This is what I'm talking about. How many people listened to Placebo relative to Sir Mix-A-Lot? This scam of pretending that the representative icons of the generation were Kurt Cobain and River Phoenix and not, like, Mario and Luigi. Gen X runs American culture now! Stop falling for it!

People have also gotten a lot of mileage out of pretending everybody in Gen X was into marginal, anti-corporate, alternative cultures when the generation also includes normal people who came of age in the 80s and whose nostalgia has shaped mainstream popular culture since the turn of the millennium.

I wish someone would do something as stupid and fantastic as release a bunch of tie-in shit for a movie that doesn’t exist

I was a file clerk at a biggish law firm (under 50 employees) where I was only one of 5 guys in the office and it was my favorite job.
