Oops, I meant to say we’re NOT* recreating Daytona 😅
comment in response to
post
We’re recreating Daytona FYI, but more so paying homage to our favorite Arcade racers in general, so we’re more like a cross between everything from Daytona USA and Outrun 2 to Ridge Racer and Burnout, pulling influences from all the franchises to create a new experience, rather than a ’fan remake’

Daytona USA is one of the influences behind the game, but unfortunately we don’t have the wonderful Takenobu Mitsuyoshi’s vocal talents to deliver the Rolling Staaaart punchline, as much as we’d love that… but there will be a bonus oval/nascar stage with rolling starts 😁👍

Yeah I suppose that’s true, Chapter 7 does feel like an endurance marathon

This looks great! Looks like F-Zero on wheels… I need to try this!

I loved some of the music in Burnout 1, particularly the Hollywood-inspired chase-music, particularly Dead-Ahead, Whiplash, and Oversteer. I wish these were available in Burnout 2’s Pursuit Mode, would’ve been fitting.

Burnout 2 is my fav in the series too! I do love Burnout 3’s visuals, sound effects, color-palette and pop-punk soundtrack. But from a pure arcade racer gameplay perspective, Burnout 2’s dynamic boost-music, handling physics, track designs, and traffic placement/timing were meticulous perfection 👌

Thank you! I loved Burnout 1-3, and even Revenge/Legends/ Dominator… but Paradise completely killed the franchise for me, I expect my arcade racers to offer high adrenaline tunnel-vision focused race to the finish line… not having to navigate a map and lose a race because I got lost 😞
comment in response to
post
The worst crime Paradise commits is that it retains the wonderful handling and drift physics of the earlier games, but the player barely gets to experience them because most of the driving is in a STRAAAAAAAAIIIIGGGHHHT line… something that seems to be popular in the modern NFS/Forza Horizon scene 😕

I always thought Chapter 1 on Very Hard was the hardest level in the whole game, it requires the most precision to get all the capsules rather than being able to use the entire track width

The very first Super Smash Bros. Our most-played 4 player game on the system by far.

OMG nooo, shouldn't have bought the official Gamecube component cable. If you get a GCHD mark II, it has a port for Wii component cables which are really cheap.

Aah, those were the days! Remember that song influenced by Wave Race? Video Games Killed the Radio Star? Good times!

Can't wait for Wave Race Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche to hit the Switch 2 NSO. Loved those games, hate that Nintendo has left the IPs dormant since then.

There’s no SEGA or Outrun 2 branding on it anywhere, so I’m guessing it’s one of those Aliexpress cabinets with custom but unlicensed Outrun 2 themed marquee and stickers. Although… there does seem to be what resembles an AM2 logo (bottom right).

It happens 😜 had me scratching my head for a moment thinking there was a secret unlockable fourth car that I never knew about 😅

The PS2 had two Sega Rally games, released as a bundle in Japan only. A port of the original arcade game Sega Rally Championship which had just the original 2 cars, and the reboot/sequel Sega Rally 2006 which had a lot more cars, but I hardly played that one to remember which cars.

There was a Daewoo in Sega Rally Championship? 😳

And then another year and bit after that we were dirt-drifting in Sega Rally!

Nightfire was awesome! Decent campaign and awesome multiplayer! It’s a very respectable successor to Goldeneye despite being a totally different developer. Deserves more recognition than it gets.

Outrun 2 is an essential for every arcade, what are they thinking getting rid of it while they’re still in business… that’s the last machine they should be letting go.

I never understood why the wheels stick out so much… but love the vibrant colors and detailed (for its time) textures!

I could picture it… The Joker from Batman the Animated Series in an open-top purple taxi, driving like a madman with whacky animations, like steering with one foot on the wheel… 😂

Now there’s a licensed game I’d like to see. Crazy Taxi - Gotham City! SEGA, DC/Warner Bros. Get talking! Sign papers. Shake hands. Make game.

what I've learned from game development this past year is... when the development process takes longer than expected because the play-testing was too much fun for the devs, you know you've got a great game on your hands!

Had no idea any of that was going on, only been following through the Over Jump Rally YouTube channel, missed all the drama! But I can vouch for “UE5 is notoriously difficult to optimise”. Alex from Digital Foundry has been addressing this for a while and working with Epic to resolve this in UE5.6+

There is a slight difference in handling. The PC version is a direct port of the Saturn game, which was built from ground up and not ported from the arcade game. But despite that they did a great job at making it feel pretty close to the arcade. It was never going to be identical given the hardware.
comment in response to
post
😂 Yeah the game was too good to let any hardware compatibilities get in the way… I still play it to this day, both on console and my local retro arcade which thankfully has a cabinet.
comment in response to
post
Ah I see, yeah Windows PCs were really finicky with compatibility back then, they solved a lot of that with Windows 7, but before then just finding the right drivers for your hardware was sometimes difficult.
