Obviously the news is still breaking but I'm slightly surprised two American politicians being shot for seemingly political reasons isn't a full stop-everything, dominate-the-timeline affair. Especially given, er, what we're probably all assuming the politics of the shooter are.

The new Vision OS "personas" - the 3D model of your face for use on video calls – looks really, really good. Makes me wonder if the uncanny valley is about to go the way of the Turing Test. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXR9...

Totally agree with you @jamesomalley.co.uk that we need to build a system where when a politician decides something, voters can actually see it happening. The alternative leads to frustration with democracy and its championing of liberal ideas open.substack.com/pub/jamesoma...

Let’s hope it doesn’t kick off in Azerbaijan, as between Russia and the Middle East, it’s getting a bit tricky to thread the needle for flights between Europe and South East Asia.

I told you HS2 was a good idea!

A fun post for a game of “dumb or cynical?”

I’m going to be speaking at this event a week on Tuesday. Come along - it should be a fun evening! lu.ma/cthbcn45?tk=...

If this had happened in 'serious' film (vs something like Mission Impossible) you'd think it was too ridiculous and that it destroyed the realism.

MI6 smugly explaining to Cobr how this can't happen here because you'd never get planning permission.

There’s a genre of autobiography which reads: “It was 1962. I was 24 & had jst purchased my first house in St John’s Wood. Thinking I’d better earn a bit of cash, I wrote to the BBC &was invited to meet the head of drama. The following week I was offered a 13 part series- v reluctantly I might add!”

Good to see Labour MPs trying to do a Jenrick in terms of video production. Mike Tapp is a good messenger on this stuff. x.com/MikeTappTwee...

It doesn't seem great that we have an MP - albeit one estranged from Reform - who is now promoting explicit Powellite racism and hanging out with white nationalist accounts on X.

Getting a new war scooped by Mike Huckabee and the Pentagon Pizza Report

Right, time for one last check of Bluesky before bed. I'm sure I'll sleep well and not be kept awake by worrying about all hell breaking loose in the world. Now to take a big swig of water and scroll down the timeline.

😬

Tune into my Substack tomorrow where I'll be wading in on the Labour Together Digital ID proposal!

This poor guy is going to have to get on another plane to get home.

It'll be very funny if we have four years of endless speculation about Reform replacing the Tories and becoming the official opposition, only for the LibDems to do it instead.

In which I reveal my insecurities about ageing.

It's slightly surprising that a plane with 53 British nationals on board crashing hasn't led to BBC One breaking into programming for rolling news. (Maybe we don't need this anymore?)

Interesting piece. Highlighting just how far into the future Britain's infrastructure projects are. Also worth noting given how long you'd hope these projects will be operational for, they may well be operating in a very different climate to the one we have today, which will only add to the cost..

I’m… not sure it does. The fall is annoying but it was the month of Trump’s “liberation day”. The masses of new capital spending seems… a bit more important news-wise?

Something broke the journalists and now they can’t write anything that isn’t ‘What does this mean for Reform at the next election?’

As someone who has also recently had a ~significant~ birthday, I could not agree with this more strongly. takes.jamesomalley.co.uk/p/britain-st...

ICYMI:

Huge thanks to James for brightening my morning by pointing out that I'll be within touching distance of getting my pension by the time I could use HS2.

Surprisingly mealy-mouthed responses from commentators with pretty obvious axes to grind. With friends like these… well, good luck to any centre-left party.

Every overview and scrutiny committee at Kent County Council for the month of June has now been cancelled or postponed. So that will now be at least two months into Reform's administration before any scrutiny or council decisions can take place.

I feel this deep on my bones for digital projects as well (especially in my new job) 😩

It's going to take the same amount of time to electrify the North-South Wales railway line as it is to design, build and launch a probe to Saturn.

Big opportunity today for Rachel Reeves to put Britain on a path to renewal by committing the government to liberating the Postcode Address File.
