Get involved in your local politics to make sure your police are doing better than this and are being held accountable. Participate or organize peaceful protests (with permits). Run for office in your township/borough/city, or at least attend public meetings (yes, even when they are boring).

Man, Penny really was a halfway decently written character in the early episodes.

Why is John Williams so incredible? He is truly, truly outstanding.

If they started making human-rights a driving principle for their business, they wouldn't be FIFA.

As @ellocust said, Republicans are in power because their voters WANTED THIS. Democrats who are in office were elected to resist and fight, but they are still pretending like they just "have to wait their turn" on the playground.

Yes, it is written on both sides; the stop sign is a remotely controlled panel that extends out of the side of the bus when triggered by the driver to indicate it is coming to a stop where a child will be entering/exiting. It displays "stop" on both sides to alert traffic from ahead and behind.

Every time I see your user image, my brain thinks it's some unusual depiction of Saint Mary looking down from beneath her veil. It only takes a second for my mind to recognize/recall that it's just bananas, but it's an interesting phenomena. Is that some form of pareidolia? 🤷

@fetterman.senate.gov you hear this, John?! Shake off your fascism-placating stupor and do what we elected you to do! Stop betraying your PA constituents and the American people and FIGHT!

Be prepared. A thrown rider is at serious risk at the best of times, let alone on pavement/concrete with hard obstacles all around. Justified or not, the police get much worse when one of their own is injured.

I know what you mean, but those poor horses didn't ask for any of this. They only do as they are trained/led.

To be fair, they might have read the book and their comments are just back-handed compliments designed to weedle their way into your psyche... my relationship with my parents is just fine, why do you ask?

Dickens understood the rich so well, apart from the contrived happy ending, Scrooge is a perfect portrait of the calloused and privileged wealthy in our world. Capitalism is a sickness of the mind and soul.

Yes, absolutely hit him with the point about mercury regulation! That is where he cut his teeth and genuinely where I believe he once cared about children. He needs to account for why Trump is chill with raising the maximum limit our citizens are exposed to.

This man is completely unrecognizable to me. I remember his time as a local politician fondly, but I don't know how to reconcile who he was here with who he is on a national stage. Was he always like this, or did power change him?

That makes sense; even among humans, it does take a combination of looks and charisma to get others to follow. I don't think that wolves work that way on account of the way that the pack is always led by the parents, but maybe bonobos...

😮💨 I appreciate the grim reminder. I don't expect there to be anything like that around here, but I didn't expect the Marines to accept an unlawful command in LA, either.

Thank you for the heads up. It's very unlikely that there will be anything like that where I will be, but you definitely give me something to think/worry about.

Note: I only separate humans from other animals in this case, because of the complex way our society allows us to make so many bizarre choices without immediate consequences, which is arguably what the original post was aiming at in an imprecise and inaccurate way.

I endorse almost everything you added here. Only, I don't know if sexiest is accurate, unless you mean in the unusual case of lifemates, but I don't consider mating in general the same as following a leader. Are there any non-human instances where a group follows an animal only for sexual fitness?

School is out for the summer, so this privileged white person is going to be showing up with his kids this weekend, at least. In the school year, I tell myself that teaching inner city kids is still a form of resistance.

I wouldn't say that means that they wouldn't follow an imbecile; it doesn't mean that I would want to live like an animal. Plenty of traits of intelligence can get you killed if you don't have a robust enough society to protect you going out on a limb.
comment in response to

Well, inasmuch as some animals follow leaders, most of them simply follow the oldest. The thing about being the oldest in the wilderness is that you don't have as many institutions (inherited wealth) to protect you from bad choices, so typically the oldest will at least be capable.

American electoral process makes this comparison useless, unfortunately. Instead of coalition government, we have a first-past-the-post two party system. By voting for parties who were willing to coalition with the Nazis, Germany effectively voted for Hitler, same as anyone who only votes GOP.
comment in response to

Of course, I am not giving a pass to Republicans who voted for Trump simply because he was the GOP candidate, but primary polls in 2016 suggested that Trump had a similar percentage of Americans who actually wanted him over anyone else. My point is that it's more complicated.
comment in response to
post
The U.S. electoral process makes it impossible to compare the elections meaningfully; would Trump have carried more than 32% of the vote if Republicans were able to be sure that voting for another candidate wouldn't mean a vote for Hillary? We don't know, because that's how our system works.

My point being that, while Pius XII's leadership was weak in comparison and deeply disappointing, there's not much reason to believe it was within his power to stop Hitler.
comment in response to
post
Pope Pius XII's silence was truly terrible, especially in the wake of Pius XI who went so far as to condemn the Nazi party and nationalism years prior. The sad reality is, however, that even Pius XI's condemnation of the Nazis being read aloud in every German parish in 1933 couldn't stop it.
