This chart is not since the middle ages, it's (coincidentally) exactly in my lifetime. Almost 1 in 4 kids born died before 5 in low income countries! Let's have more of humanity crushing it, and less of whatever we have in 2025, please.

This is a magisterial write-up of this near-miraculous scientific & medical achievement.

My grandmas were immigrants, my mum & sisters in law are immigrants; my sister & nephews are migrants. My kids study maths, Shakespeare, dance, act & score tries alongside the kids of immigrants. My dad’s life was saved by immigrants. Immigrants have made us richer, wiser, stronger Win the fight

Thanks to everybody who chimed in! I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist. So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>

Powerful moment: leaders of France (Macron), Germany (Merz) and U.K. (Starmer) arrive in Kyiv together, to be joined by Poland’s leader (Tusk) In support of Ukraine In defiance of Russian aggression Together as Europeans, west to east 🇫🇷🇩🇪 🇬🇧🇵🇱🇪🇺🇺🇦

This morning I was thinking, "the number they announce better be in billions-with-a-b", so I'm a little disappointed, but this is starting to look like the level of seriousness required.

Of all the mistakes the GOP has made, this will be the most consequential. For US’s science, technology, and innovation - but, mostly, by purging scientists, huge loses to the economy, security, and standing in the world. For absolutely no reason. Alas, to the wood chipper.

This is neat. Opening sentences in encyclopedia entries are tightly stylistically constrained, so the link chain rapidly becomes abstract. Humorously "philosophy" itself breaks the pattern, as it immediately loops between "Existence" and "Reality" (if you ignore parentheticals & disambiguations).

This piece is great. Illuminating as someone who has lived here 5 years (😮) to hear a visitor’s impressions. Though her attempt to provide pronunciation advice of “löyly” misses the mark. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/m...

20 years ago today, at 5:50 AM, a little more than a week after I had arrived in Oxford, I was headed to see the Magdalen choir. Pretty magical introduction to my new home!

In case you missed it, here’s the Hymnus Eucharisticus sung from the top of the Great Tower for May Morning by Magdalen College Choir!

It is fun to dunk on OpenAI, but if you're upset because it isn't good at doing multiplication problems, then I think the PEBKAC.

Eight year old: Who is the pope? Me: Begins to explain… Eight year old, interrupting: “It turns out I don’t care about that.”

Ahhhhhhh, these initiatives are all so small! This is only $10M, which can “lure” maybe 2 top researchers. Norway is best positioned country on earth to do this: $2T in their sovereign wealth fund. Make this 100x bigger!

Nobody has asked my opinion, but if they did, I would advise the Lib Dems to go all in on education, universities and skills training as the defining subject for the future of the country.

Really nice visualisation of a lagged health outcome over decades (in contrast to the delays over days/weeks we typically see for acute infectious diseases like COVID)

Yes. Every person & organization that stands firm makes it easier for the next one.

I don't think people who DO have a criminal record should be disappeared to a Salvadoran prison either
