Special education teachers who provide critical support will be among the 1st to go with Trump's gutting of the Department of Education so he can give billionaires who don't need it, tax cuts. Vulnerable students & families will be terribly hurt by this. Call Congress and raise hll: 202-224-3121

If we had an ACTUAL autism spectrum presidency, work-from-home would be mandatory & there would be a tax credit for Squishmallows.

My kid lives in Siddall Hall and sent me these yesterday. First is what was put up by the school, second is the students’ alteration of the administrations’ cowardice.

And everyone has their choices to make, and I completely understand it, no judgment. I have considered the possibility that this wildness could end up being, like, a love letter to a school that doesn't survive. But in the end, I don't think so. I think we'll make it.

The stakes are, honestly, existential for the school. We are losing families the longer school is out, and most don't want to go, but cannot work w/o childcare. Others are just so traumatized and destabilized that the instability with school was just too much.

A tricky thing is that our school has been out of session a long time, and we're waiting to find out whether the city of Pasadena will let us use a commercial? space as a school. The gov of CA has issued an order asking cities to expedite, but. School will start Wed but we don't know where.

For the proposal, a friend had used ChatGPT to make a "starting point" list for PE items b/c the time crunch was so desperate, & if you need a reason to never do this, might I suggest the full set of dumbbells that it got for the TK-5 kids. It's like being drunk texted by yourself from the past.

It needs proofreading. At one point, I noticed that every classroom's list had a request for FIVE GALLONS of hand sanitizer, but it was so late at night I didn't trust myself to fix it, like when it's 2 AM maybe you are just misreading the # of ounces?

Five parents (the board & friend), and me to a much lesser extent, spent the weekend copying and pasting and reformatting lists for upload to Amazon (I guess as CSVs, though I didn't do that part), getting loopier and dropping too many GIFs in Slack in the process.

Not to mention the emotional impact of taking stock of a space you've lost and trying to delineate every item within it. In the end, the proposal wasn't approved, which is so disappointing. But we want to make those lists live Amazon wishlists, and see if we can ask folks to help us clear them.

I felt ambivalent about this, because (1) it was too good an offer to pass up, and had the potential to save—I don't know—hundreds of thousands of dollars, and (2) asking traumatized people to complete a complex and time-consuming task didn't feel like centering their needs.

Weeks ago, we had done a TON of work for a non-profit who had us make a giant spreadsheet of everything we could think of that we'd need to re-stock our school: supplies, furniture, tech, the works. And a similar one for families who lost their homes with furnishings, etc.
