Why sowing fear in tax filing is basically like attacking Christmas open.substack.com/pub/american...

What we’re looking at now isn’t the worst job market college graduates have ever seen. It is, however, the worst such market compared with workers in general that we’ve ever seen, by a large margin.

The Trump administration is canceling the specialized suicide hotline for LGBTQ support. Calling 988 and following certain responses/prompts will no longer bring callers to the Trevor Project. In 2024, the Trevor Project helped 500,000 people of which 231,000 came through the 988 line.

🥗 ICE access to IRS may gut EITC/CTC @jeremybney.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/american...

A new partnership between ICE and the IRS has put America’s most successful poverty alleviation program under siege americaninequality.substack.com/p/taxes-and-...

As someone who was just in these fields a few weeks ago reporting for a story it pains me deeply to see this

@annikainampudi.bsky.social's first byline for @science.org, on how Black inmates at the Stateville Penitentiary were experimented on by scientists wanting to better understand side effects to a crucial malaria drug: www.science.org/content/arti...

The IMF just published a report saying that all data centers globally use more electricity than the entirety of France’s demand (pop. 68 million). By 2030, the use will be more than Russia’s electricity demand (pop. 144 million)

We’ve entered the most dangerous time of the year for America’s worst natural disasters. Buckle up people this year is going to be a rollercoaster

There is no universe where this is the best way to balance the budget, which is only attractive to republicans when it favors their narrative for blocking bills

@jeremybney.bsky.social: ‪"On May 8, NOAA said its well-known “billion-dollar weather and climate disasters” database “will be retired.” "Low-income communities—who are at the greatest risk of these disasters—are about to feel the biggest blowback." time.com/7287017/noaa...

#rsstime

"In one global study of natural disasters over a 30 year period, researchers found that annual household incomes fell by 21.5% and took almost a decade to recover...low-income families in particular take two to three times longer to financially recover compared to their wealthier counterparts."

🥗 As natural disasters worsen, NOAA retires its billion-dollar disaster database, so we won’t know the true impact of future disasters. FEMA’s been gutted too so low income areas won’t get help. From @jeremybney.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/american...

More billion-dollar disasters are laying waste to American cities each year, but soon the public will have no idea how bad these damages really are. Low-income communities are going to feel the worst of it. My latest in TIME. time.com/7287017/noaa...

How can we help the 19 million Americans who live in overcrowded homes? The solutions are simple, but the coordination is complex. Let's raise grades, health outcomes, and communities. americaninequality.substack.com/p/overcrowdi...

This figure is striking. It shows the relationship between where people think they are in the income distribution and where they actually are. Observations below the line indicate that people think they are poorer than they really are (and the reverse above the line). What do you notice?

New article coming out on Wednesday about how tariffs are going to impact inequality

Is ChatGTP going to increase inequality? americaninequality.substack.com/p/ai-and-ine... Two professions are at the greatest risk and certain parts of the country have sky-high exposure. Plus, some helpful insights we can learn from the Luddites and why you're probably wrong about them.

Surprised to see it but business school applications are way up

23andMe just filed for bankruptcy. The most recent public bid is $11 million for a company once valued at $6.1 billion. With DNA data from 40 million people, what could go wrong?

“Natural disasters cause a massive spike in homelessness,” said Jeremy Ney who researches inequality. “The goal of relief organizations like the Red Cross is to prevent people from becoming permanently unhoused — but for many, it can take a decade or more to recover.” stateline.org/2025/02/07/f...

This is a crazy chart

What natural disaster happened in 1998 that left nearly 30 million people homeless? Was it Hurricane Mitch? Can't find a good answer. And what about 1933?

Happy Pi Day from my favorite pie chart

In at least some positive news, egg prices are down 40% hooray?

"Welcome to a special newsletter! I recently had the opportunity to sit down with @jeremybney.bsky.social of American Inequality to talk about his deep dives into data & the trends he’s seeing in homelessness and poverty across the country. I hope you enjoy it and give American Inequality a follow!"

One fact that always surprises my students: It's not become more common for people to have multiple jobs in recent years Counter to: "people need to work more jobs just to make ends meet" popular conception. The % of people who work a full time job plus additional jobs has been stable for decades

And this statistic will probably get FAR worse if abortion bans spread.

Several states have implemented changes that allow women to get a 1-year supply of the pill instead of 1-month at a time. Studies have now found that “dispensing a 1-year supply is associated with a 30% reduction in the odds of conceiving an unplanned pregnancy”. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21343759/

I was shocked to find that the leading cause of maternal mortality isn’t women dying in hospital beds from complications It’s homicides More pregnant women or new moms die from the violent hand of their partners than any other cause in America I know this can be hard to “like” but we need change

70% of injuries and deaths in the Russia-Ukraine war are now from drones. Just 3 years ago this number was just a small fraction of that.

Change in coal consumption and carbon dioxide emissions

Too real

The CDC completely botched the rollout of maternal mortality data. Things were so bad that it had to stop reporting this data for a full decade between 2007-2017. See why we may still be dramatically miscounting these numbers for moms americaninequality.substack.com/p/maternal-m...

The U.S. is not in the same league with Iran and Lebanon when it comes to maternal mortality. New research shows America’s numbers may be far better open.substack.com/pub/american...

I’ve been writing American Inequality for 4 years now and it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. I’m still so excited about this work and I honestly think the best is still yet to come. americaninequality.substack.com

What happened in 1971?

Great waterfall chart showing how the fiscal deficit has changed between 2017 and 2024 Unsurprisingly non-discretionary spending accounts for 2/3 of total spending

Anyone written anything good on how tariffs are going to impact ineqaulity?

I wrote about how Doge is involved in cutting cancer research www.vanityfair.com/news/story/d...

Coal production has not declined in low-income countries (LIC) or low/mid-income countries (LMIC) in past years. In many parts of the world (China, Russia), coal production is ramping up. Via World Bank
