More complete analysis of NIH outlays (or lack thereof) from grant-watch.us grant-watch.us/posts/trends...

My quote of the day If future generations are to remember us more with gratitude than sorrow, we must achieve more than just the miracles of technology. We must also leave them a glimpse of the world as it was created, not just as it looked when we got through with it. Lyndon B. Johnson

I helped explain to the Chicago Tribune the enourmous and irrational damage the NIH funding freeze is causing at Northwestern. “You’re at risk of losing an entire next generation of scientists" "it’s terrifying; it’s completely senseless." www.chicagotribune.com/2025/06/07/w...

Keep in mind: these are AWARDED grants, with Notice of Awards. The federal government is not honoring existing contracts with this university, refusing to reimburse for costs charge on awarded grants.

Funding freeze at Northwestern from Emma Mairson at grant-watch.us. Data from USAspending. Normally, ~$70 M per month. Now, bupkis. Northwestern is keeping research moving and must be spending ~$40 M per month. Clearly not sustainable for too long.

Evidence that too much is going on. Reached all three goals including 12 stand hours...by just after 3 PM.

My quote of the day (3 parts) “Righteous anger is usually not about oneself. It is about those whom one sees being harmed and whom one wants to help." In short, righteous anger is a tool of justice, a scythe of compassion, more than a reactive emotion... 1/3

Neuroscientist Sarah Heilbronner is a proud product of Martin County schools in Florida 🌴. However, federal budget cuts threaten important work she's doing in brain research. 🧪🏠 @srheilbronner.bsky.social www.tcpalm.com/story/opinio...

Out now in @nathumbehav.nature.com: Cuts to NIH funding will impact the economy and employment nationwide. We visualize these losses and advocate for a theory-driven approach to communicating local, self-relevant impact. w/ @joshuasweitz.bsky.social + SCIMaP team: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I completely concur with the analysis of @davidimiller.bsky.social here

Just effing wonderful…

Very smart, high ROI initiative from the Spencer Foundation. Providing bridge funding for canceled NSF grants: 1) directs funds to projects already screened by a top-noch review process. 2) avoids imposing proposal prep costs on researchers. 3) ameliorates the disruption from GOP sabotage.

Outstanding op-ed from Carole LaBonne Universities and the government: Which needs the other more? College-based research labs are the workhorses of national progress and prosperity. wapo.st/3ZR1vFm 1/n

(1) Whoever engages in the conduct constituting the offense shall be imprisoned for not more than one year or fined in the amount set forth in this title ($50,000), or both. It is worse if it is "willful"

If you are wondering why recently departed senior NIH officials are not speaking out more, there is a legal 1-year cooling off period for matters related to NIH. Their silence should not be interpreted as complicity or cowardice, but rather respect for the rule of law.

That is correct. She grew up in the house in Mexico City where Trotsky was assassinated with an ice axe by a Russian agent in August 1940.

NIH trivial of Jeopardy recently...

Getting confirmation from several sources that the review branch at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at NIH no longer exists. I am sure this is true across many/all institutes and centers at NIH. I hope the Center for Scientific Review will be up to the task.

My quote of the day I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. Abraham Lincoln

Welcome Bryan!
