Today, Nobel laureate (and former NIGMS Advisory Council member) gave an NIH-wide lecture. She enthusiastically signed the #BethesdaDeclaration. She was introduced by NIH Director Bhattacharya...(likely slightly awkward) 1/2

After some of Dr. Bhattacharya's comments about trans people and "ideological boondogles", I sent him a copy of Ben Barres's "Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist".

I signed the Bethesda Declaration support letter and please consider signing it as well! Support NIH scientists and staff!!

Thank you @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social for standing up. We all appreciate you and your colleagues for your courage!

Sorry @thevillalab.bsky.social! This rude, almost combatant letter does not say it, but I will: thank you for your service!

That is my experience as well.

😭😭😭

Unfortunately, this rings true. I have also been thinking about the "Cultural Revolution"...

The reviews are in... It did not go well for Dr. Bhattacharya yesterday... thehill.com/homenews/sen...

So good to see this happening. Renewed hope is also partially what NIH is all about.

I'm proud to be standing up with you @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social. Together, we can all help end the disruptions to life-saving biomedical research.

Jenna’s daughter get it…

Here is Senator Murray's statement regarding the #BethesdaDeclaration at the appropriation subcommittee hearing today with Dr. Bhattacharya.

I am glad you found it interesting. He had a fascinating life and was just a wonderful man.

In the background over the past few weeks, I wrote an obituary of Peter Lax for Nature. He was one of my dad's best friends and one of my favorite people in the world. He was also an incredibly influential mathematician. [Gift Link thanks to Nature] rdcu.be/eqmiR

Here is a link to a good CNN story including an interview with two of the NIH folks who wrote the #BethesdaDeclaration and stood up. More bravery facing the cameras. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD8y...

Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana is not a serious person. He frequently cites "yachts" and "expensive houses" in discussing indirect costs. He is referring to a scandal at Stanford when they were charge depreciation of a yacht and the President's mansion. en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Profess... 1/3

I agree with Dr. Bhattacharya about something. He said that he was "fully committed" to various health research goals >10 time during the hearing but defended his administration's actions as helping further these goals. If he is crazy enough to truly believe that, then he should be fully committed.

Watching the Bhattacharya hearing... Senator Murray mentioned the #BethesdaDeclaration letter and said that she assumed that there would be no retribution.
