Weird how all these right-leaning movements want to get rid of the 14th Amendment. Idk if something is special about it?

If you're not placing today's ruling against gender-affirming care for trans youth in the context of John Roberts' lifelong campaign to suck the life out of the Fourteenth Amendment, and equality for actual humans more broadly, you're doing it wrong. Here, for @vanityfair.com, I attempt to do that.

Brennan Center has written extensively on the bogus “radicalization” theory of a predictable path to violence. It relies on “indicators” like new religious views, mental health struggles, & paying off (or having!) debt. It invites bias & delivers few results. www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

@stephenlemons.bsky.social to his credit has been absolutely right on this as long as he's been writing.

Claremont is training sheriffs and local police, and this is what they are training them to think the law is. It's totally ideological and a threat to people across the country.

It's awful -- and parents of trans kids will suffer the threat of surveillance and criminalization for trying to do right by their kids. A tragedy all around.

I have almost too much to say about this, but one thing worth noting is how the piece suggests that cooperating with Trump on mass deportations is a way to stop ICE raids -- which is, I think, the goal. Coerce cooperation with the idea that it's harm reduction.

With all due respect, I disagree with this analysis, after studying sheriffs for a decade. I do think we (using it intentionally vaguely) need to take more seriously the problems with electorial strategies and start to consider other methods.

Here's what everyone needs to know about today's big trans rights ruling: There will be states where trans youth will be able to access lifesaving, medically necessary care, and states where they won't and they and their families will suffer grave harm. If that's not inequality, then nothing is.

Though the Senate passed it, the Assembly closed out its annual session without voting on a bill to make New York the fourth state to ban citation of "excited delirium" syndrome, which medical experts decry as dubious justification for police violence. nysfocus.com/2025/06/11/e...

With a shocking and unprecedented level of aggressiveness, the Administration has been targeting Democratic officials on trumped up—and often transparently baseless—charges that they’re interfering with Trump’s immigration crackdown. My latest: www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...
