One of the less remembered reasons for SNAP is the incredible productivity of US farmers tended to create excess harvests, which craters the prices.
So the purchase of food for poor people is to assist farmers as much as anything.
The farmers are now screwed.

Reagan tore all those guardrails down. It wasn’t an accident, it was part of the long term strategy to roll back the rules so the corporations and 1%ers could be unconstrained

hanging in a sky clotted with tears
and scented not by the pale flowers
of this dangerous summer but the earthy perfume
of a pale rider laughing softly in his saddle

love is hidden in the four corners of history
in the silence of arthropods that feast on mortality
and even as i call your name
the darkness of the infinite evening swallows my words

One of the freedoms of age is to spend less time looking at oneself.
I, for one, am far more interested in helping others with whatever I may have learned, than caring how I appear.
But I am very lucky. My wife forgave me for my appearance decades ago.

They will only respond if they lose their seats in an election- and maybe not then.
I wonder who would run for office if there were strict requirements for audits and penalties for insider trading, emoluments, and the employment of relatives

A little noticed side effect of this will be even lower CAN tourism to US- there are mega RV campgrounds in AZ for Canadians seeking both winter warmth and Mexican dental care. Tens of 1000s every winter.

I did the same 4 years ago when we moved into our NH house. We get snow now and then. Lost about 30 days of electricity production each winter.
The rest of the time we save literally tons of emissions and get credit bills for our all electric home. Thou$ands.

No matter how you extol a shit sandwich, praise its aroma, award it prizes, garnish it with predictions of popularity- it is still a shit sandwich.

Wait till you see the numbers from WW 1 - they make the casualty lists from WW 2 look small. The European war went on for years and decimated whole countries before the U.S. even started out.
The sTrumpet has no concept of allies, history, or valor.

Everyone in America should use their favorite delivery service to send burgers and fries to the criminal in the White House.
Good chance he never makes it to the end of his term

Retailers generally don’t set a price, they set a margin. Once they negotiate a cost they set the price based on the margin they feel they can make. That incudes competition, expected sales velocity, merch space- 100s of factors sometimes.
Unless you live in 1885.

Imagine how I feel. Around 1975 I bought brand new Chevy for $1500, and parked it in the driveway of my first house, which cost us $21,500. The mortgage was $126 /mo.

I do not believe the Rs voted for him and the rest of the Legion of Incompetents because they believed his lies.
They fear the vindictive Doughboy and the $$ of his Musketeer will force them out of office.

Never forget that the entire idea of profit-driven healthcare is a recent phenomenon. It didn’t even exist 50 years ago. Nor was it necessary.
Health care was fundamentally non profit until they got listed in stock markets

I actually agree, which is good since I have lived in New England for more than half a century. But my comfort zone is very narrow in my elder years. I used to enjoy cold weather more when I skied and skated and such. Not so much anymore.
The best seasons are the swing seasons, spring and fall.

This week I hosted a presentation by Turtle Rescue at our local library. We set up 40 chairs. We had 70+ people show up including 20+ kids, to learn about our endangered turtles, and how to keep them safe.

The Mouse That Roared is a great book and was a terrific though largely forgotten movie. If a tiny country declared war on the U.S. and won, what would they do with it?
Not serious but rollicking good fun.

If you are gonna be taken over by another country, you could do worse.
If might take a couple of generations before Americans could learn to be polite enough to be released from occupation,

One of the reasons Germany invaded Russia when they did was that Stalin had purged the military leadership and were a mess.
Russia took more catastrophic damage in WW2 than anyone because leadership was inexperienced and unprepared at first.
We now look vulnerable.

I remember an America that gloried in its variety.
I personally do not care what you call yourself, where you started, how you worship, who you partner with, or whether you are left handed.
I do care how you behave, how you treat others, and whether you are responsible as a person.

Some friends of ours have been traveling abroad quite often in their retirement.
It’s like a switch was pulled. Americans are no longer welcomed. We are like feral animals, possibly diseased, and will likely bite.
They think we have lost our minds.
They are correct.
