very cool that for ten years people at the heights of political commentary insisted to the point of rage that the paramount threat to free speech was “censorious” college students

Bunch of fucking thugs in this administration. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

BREAKING: Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. announced he has ordered the FDA to consider new nationwide restrictions on medication abortion — and that President Trump, not scientists or doctors, will make the final decision.

Thousands of transgender troops who have served our nation honorably will soon be purged from the military because of their identity. It is shameful that the Supreme Court’s majority won’t even explain why it greenlit this mass act of unconstitutional discrimination. slate.com/news-and-pol...

Federal court decision ordering NC to certify state supreme court election of Democrat Allison Riggs is BFD But can’t overlook how two GOP-dominated state courts ok'd brazen effort to steal election & throw out 1000s of votes. Chilling precedent for democracy www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Grebes! Grebes! Grebes! Today! Today! Today! 🪶

Among new National Endowment of Arts grant priorities: “foster AI competency, empower houses of worship.” Not making this up. Also, pretty sure more submission to our new AI overlords isn’t gonna be great for churches…

Great to see! "A major company, Microsoft, has dropped a law firm that settled with the administration in favor of one that is fighting it." www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/b...

Laura Loomer called 9/11 an inside job, is banned from Uber for her bigoted views, and describes herself as being "pro-white nationalist.” Not exactly the kind of person you want advising the president on matters of national security. Where is the mainstream press coverage on this?

A new study by economists estimates that a 25% cut in science funding would result in a GDP decline similar in magnitude to the 2008 recession. They also estimate that a 75% cut to government science would trigger a larger GDP decline than in any recession since the Great Depression.

This is the best 100-day recap I’ve seen — and it begs the damn question: Why is his approval rating still 39%? Are folks in a coma?

There are some things worse than a recession, @annielowrey.bsky.social writes. “The United States’ hegemony over the financial markets is at stake”:

An excellent refutation of the admins bullshit anti semitism push and the anti semites behind it.

Do traders have Stockholm Syndrome? Rally today appears based on WSJ report that we might have "only" 50-65% tariff on Chinese goods. That's still a huge effing tariff - roughly triple the average effective tariff rate on China last year. US companies still don't have margins to absorb this

Nothing in my lifetime prepared me for this. Or for wanting to watching this over-and-over again

Trump says Harvard discriminates against cancer. He intends to stop that.

Veneer of discipline? Incredible.

How can you listen to his words and say he's promoting antisemitism?

Do you know the difference between “$2 trillion” and “$150 billion”? About $2 trillion.

Problem: Fraud in the Social Security program. Solution: Force all elderly people to create an account on X. Genius level stuff.

State media watch. What is happening to our democracy right in front of our eyes.

“BRING HIM HOME” 🔥

“They were careless people, they smashed up things and people, and then retreated back into their money," The Great Gatsby. F Scott Fitzgerald. 100 years old today.

My @nehgov.bsky.social grant “In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union” was canceled by “DOGE.” The project doesn’t support "the furtherance of the President's agenda.” Jews surviving genocide: out of step w/ the agenda of using Jews to destroy higher ed.

Maybe you should just focus on getting through this term unimpeached, little man. apnews.com/article/trum...

We've heard concerning things about the Social Security Administration lately, so I decided to check for myself. SSA says Wednesday is the best day to call, so I called then. Their system told me there would be a two-hour wait time, told me to call back, and then just hung up.

Trump's executive order tonight has illegally cancelled union contracts for 67% of the federal workforce & 75% of unionized federal employees — roughly 700,000 union workers This may be the single biggest attack on the labor movement in American history

Trump literally cited the number of lawsuits that unions had filed against his illegal actions as justification for his EO busting unions. This is political revenge to shut us up, plain and simple.

lol

oh my god -- Comer thinks "editorial standards" literally refers to standards for editorials and is corrected by the NPR head

I grew up in Minnesota, though haven’t lived there in over a decade. But I suspect anyone with good politics who respects the tradition of Paul Wellstone while refusing to vote for Trump’s policies (Klobuchar has voted to confirm 7 of Trump’s cabinet picks) would succeed.

I’m a broken record this spring on this but 60 Minutes every single week is crushing it. Led by Scott Pelley who has gone from threats to our Justice Dept to firing of our independent watchdogs to a heartwarming story tonight that brought American culture to millions.

2000+ Jewish professors, staff, and students circulating a letter on Trump-Vance's arrest of Mahmoud Khalil: "We hold various views…But we are united in denouncing…anyone who invokes our name—and cynical claims of antisemitism—to harass, expel, arrest, or deport members of our campus communities."

The touchstone of most authoritarian regimes is not the kind of total control that most people feel in their day-to-day lives. It is that the regime is only selectively bound by law, producing constant low-grade anxiety as to whether, how, or against whom power will be exercised.
