It is probably a function of policy actually now that I think about it. You get 13.000 SEK a month if you max the loans and grants, and you also cannot work too much if you are getting them. You can only make 80.000 extra without being penalized.

Knowing my own brain chemistry, I do not think I would ever learn anything if I was going through my undergraduate today. I was a late bloomer in learning how to learn. If LLMs existed when I was 20, I don't think I'd every learn how to learn.

It seems really different than the culture in Sweden where students often max out their study grants and loans and don't work on the side at all (besides summer).

Sweden in the past has had a taboo on open displays of nationalism -- and while I don't believe that civic nationalism is a panacea for inclusion -- I think national holidays and naturalization ceremonies are important to let people into the national community.

Immigrants are overrepresented among those who celebrate. This is speculated to be partially because of citizenship ceremonies which take place on the national day. But I also think it is because immigrants reflect over their national identity more.
