Reality is stupider than fiction right now, and yet I obsess over my fiction because I want it to be "plausible." It's very funny, actually.

Reads up on Palantir while furiously taking notes to add more worldbuilding details to a future novel's totalitarian government.

Here is my personal philosophy, based on several decades of watching publishers go under: the moment a publisher is late on money because they don't have it, they are the enemy and your goal is to get your rights back.

Every time I get frustrated at the Belgian news outlets' coverage of events I put on American news as a grim reminder what completely captured media pumping out 24/7 pro-dictatorship propaganda really looks like.

motherfucker isn't even sorry, that is the face of a guy who is totally gonna do it again

every so often someone will reply with a take thats incorrect and while addressing the error you realise it is so stupid that the actual best use of everyone's time is to pretend you never saw it at all and just keep on living your life instead and this is called personal growth

"Asking sacrifices for permission would kill the ritual sacrifice industry" Then maybe, here's an idea: the ritual sacrifice industry shouldn't exist. "Asking artists for permission would kill the AI industry" Then maybe, here's an idea: the AI industry shouldn't exist.

I don’t want to “streamline” my writing. I don’t want to “increase my output.” I don’t want to “write a novel with one click.” I want to write stuff only I can write. I want to read and write novels with soul and heart and a unique voice. Fuck AI. Long live real writers.

Editing update: I discovered a passage where the sun sets twice...in the same scene. Oof. That's getting cut. On the bright side, I'm closing in on the 50% done mark. I wager I'll be done in time to write a new novel this year.

It's weird to me that so many of my neighbors voted to take away their own healthcare to give me a tax cut. They need their health care. I don't need a tax cut. Neither does anyone who makes more than me, either.

We need to stop remonstrating with people to please just think of the planet and start mocking them mercilessly for being so stupid they accept answers from an idiot machine

Congratulations to the Austrian contestant winning Eurovision yesterday!

Listen, I need; ABSOLUTELY NEED; left wing parties around the world to understand it's pointless to cater to the sensibilities of far-right voters.

And it will. The question is rather in what state we'll reach that point rather than if, so the sooner we reach it the better. The damage LLMs have done is already at a point it'll take well over 100 years to clean up.

Saw this and thought my oomfs' feeds could use this

Great countries have lots of dolls. In great countries, folks buy as many dolls as they want and they don't have to pick between dolls and rent or insulin. More dolls is greatness. More healthcare. More freedom. More rights. More education. More equality. More safety. Greatness is giving girls more.

Soon, I'll be back to editing my oversized manuscript. I have a couple of good ideas to change in the next part already, so I'm looking forward to the result this time around.

Every now and then I remember that visual novels are REALLY COOL and wonder just how minimalist I could with the visuals—stick figures? collage?—and then I have to remind myself that I already need to hand in four books this year.

Being a writer is telling yourself, “There’s no way I can put this feeling into words” and then trying anyway.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching. Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

I love these silicon valley bros that think ChatGPT has achieved some kind of sentience and therefore might have rights. Like dudes, you don't even think poor people deserve rights, let's try to achieve that before giving person-hood to the autocomplete algorithm.

Programmers, developers, engineers and academics who have put their entire lives into designing technologies now lumped under the marketing umbrella of "AI," and they are having a *moment* trying and failing to get people to stop despising it. Maybe point that at the techbros?

It'll never stop making me feel insane that writers are made to feel crazy for appropriately valuing their craft while guys who haven't written an email on their own in three years are painting themselves as essential to the future

Rewatching HONOR AMONG THIEVES and once again, let me say they absolutely nailed the Paladin.

everything about the tech and ai world makes me sick to my stomach. it’s all so deeply anti-social

"they are going to end cancer research and kill its top scientists" is the kind of thing that would get you laughed out of the writer's room on saturday morning cartoons and it is literally what's happening

Let's not forget the "useful" use-cases so far are never stated and must be derived from what LLMs are actually used for, from which we can deduce the top 3 "useful" use-cases are: 1) Scamming 2) Pedo stuff 3) Spreading disinformation I think "they suck and aren't useful" does hold water.

this is literally all of it, in every single anti affirmative action movement everywhere on earth

Yes, I've seen the account that alleges to be from someone at a literary agency, making fun of queries that come through the door. If real, it's shitty, unethical behavior, also, I just wrote a best-selling book about the moon turning to cheese, so fuck anyone shaming writers for "out there" ideas.

Honestly, this is a fireable offense to me, as a copyeditor. 1. Don't rewrite an author's work. Think and feel are two different words. The change doesn't clarify anything. 2. If you've got a bee in your bonnet, QUERY! Do not rewrite!

I care less about Signal chats and more about the blacksite offshore concentration camps we're sending random people to without any semblance of a trial, so I'll be interested to see if the national media can rub their bellies and pat their heads at the same time this week. Historically they can't.

This makes me want to query you more.

Having grown up with no money, I truly love money. Money makes the world easier. Money feeds my cats, and their welfare matters more than my own. But these people pursue money to the "could never spend it" degree, and Liana's right: that's an addiction. It's a sickness.

A thread of protests across the UK, standing up for trans rights:

Maybe his sample size should be larger than Elon Musk.

hat tip to the late great Rembrandt, who loved his selfies so much he made it his whole career and got people to pay millions for them after he died

Look, I'm not saying it's wrong to bully transphobic authors and their sycophantic fans. I am saying, maybe some of that energy should be directed at the judge responsible too. Also, call your reps, you UK keyboard warriors; you know who you are, yes, you, you lazy git. Go make a difference!
