The Ballantine fantasy classics were published through the 70s, and I read most of them. Fritz Leiber, André Norton and many others also appeared on the shelves from the early 70s, great memories of reading THE SWORDS OF LANKHMAR and the WITCH WORLD books around 1971.

In 1970 I'd go into my local bookshop and find one stack of SFF...mostly SF, with Tolkien and Mike Moorcock at the bottom of the stack. In 1980 there were three stacks and 80% was fantasy. Brooks, Donaldson and Eddings were the first huge sellers, with Feist's MAGICIAN following a few years later.
