Just say "Heatwaves are becoming more common and more intense due to climate change." Or better don't just tag this on end - make the reason for the event (i.e. fossil-fuel driven climate change) part of the main story, as you would with any other event.

Looking at progress in emissions reductions from 2023 to 24, the aviation sector is setting off alarm bells:
"... aviation now contributes a greater share of total UK emissions than the entire electricity supply sector. Continued emissions growth in this sector could put future targets at risk."

I don't like "new normal" much anyway. It fails to communicate the fact that this is going to get worse & worse until net-zero. The new normal will be worse than now.

It's vital that for future climate, we don't just present model range - but true uncertainties - accounting for suspected model errors. This is hard. Made harder by climate-sceptic elements of the media and fossil-fuel funded lobbying groups. But failing to may fail to communicate true risk

As Kay et al say, "A low probability [of > 40 degC] was estimated for the 2020s, with a return time of 100–300 years, although this is likely to be conservative given that models have been reported to underestimate trends in summer extreme temperatures in northwest Europe"

"The global economy could face a 50% loss in GDP between 2070 and 2090 unless immediate policy action on risks posed by the climate crisis is taken, warns a new report by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)." actuaries.org.uk/media-releas...

And great to meet the early career researchers (ECRs) who will be delivering much of the work in person. We should be able to do a lot in the 2 years.

Abigail and Ian are two of eighteen @just-stopoil.bsky.social supporters facing sentencing this May, all of them potentially facing prison time.
Previous sentences have been called “manifestly excessive” by the High Court and “not acceptable in a democracy” by a UN Special Rapporteur.
