For some perspective, the federal government funds *over half* of all scientific research and development conducted by the @uofcalifornia.bsky.social -- and UC is collectively responsible, in turn, for over 8% of all academic research conducted in the United States.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. And who pays the bills for this stupidity? Ordinary Americans, many of whom are already struggling. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/c...

If a Democratic president cut off one of the red states dependent on federal funding, it would be a political scandal. But cutting off California -- the single biggest "donor state" in the nation, one that sends in to the fed'l gov't ~$80 billion more than it gets back -- is straight-up theft.

THREAD: An ex-DOGE engineer with no government or medical experience used AI to identify which Veterans Affairs contracts to kill, labeling them as “MUNCHABLE.” @vernalcoleman.bsky.social @ericumansky.bsky.social and I got the code. Here’s what it tells us 1/

If you’re wondering if US climate researchers are freaking out, yeah they’re freaking out.

Two Utah attorneys were ordered to pay opposing counsel's fees and refund their client after submitting a petition that cited imaginary and incorrectly applied cases — thanks to the unchecked use of ChatGPT.

Hi! I specialize in medication toxicity. All available, real-world data has proven mifepristone is actually even safer than many over the counter medicines. Mortality rates: Mifepristone: 0.65/100,000 Penicillin 2/100K Viagra 4/100K Pregnancy in the US: 22/100,000 (some states see rates >60/100K)

🚨BIG STORY: Senators put a line into the crypto bill requiring bankrupt banks to prioritize remunerating crypto investors over depositors. The provision could require banks to take cash from your savings account & use it to pay senators' crypto donors. www.levernews.com/cryptos-new-...

9 out of 10 agencies targeted by DOGE for layoffs are liberal-leaning. Every single proposed GOP budget increase goes to conservative agencies. They're not cutting fat—they're performing ideological surgery with a chainsaw.

Worth sharing my response to this question on fb here as well.

Musk was supposed to be "focused" on Tesla after his DOGE special government employee period ended. Today, the company shed $152 billion in market cap (its worst single day hit ever) after Musk feuded with Trump. www.cnbc.com/2025/06/05/t...

An exciting battery project - based on rusting iron! - is being developed in Donegal, one of Ireland's most remote outposts. It's a new ultra long-duration energy storage tech, and the subject of my latest column: www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Four trends to consider in relation to Canada’s wildfire situation: 1) The total number of fires per year is declining 2) The number of very large HUMAN-caused fires is declining 3) The number of arsons is declining 4) The total burn area is *increasing* This suggests a strong climate influence.

Texas’ conservative Legislature has again and again refused to mandate that most private businesses use E-Verify. Experts say that Republican resistance is rooted in how the system could impact the state’s labor supply and economy. @lomikriel.bsky.social w/ @texastribune.org

But by all means, let's focus on an ex-President's mental acuity instead

🔌💡Did a climate thing last night I’m proud of & hopeful about: organized a meeting to help about 50 town supervisors, fire chiefs & planning officials in my county understand the value and safety of grid-scale batteries… so they’ll stop imposing moratoria on siting them. 🧵 (1/9)

I came back with a story about anti-vaccine activists who exploited the crisis, outmatched doctors and public health officials working to contain it — and a community left to bear the cost. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Worth noting that 2023 was the 4th most active hurricane season on record, with 20 named storms. The Atlantic basically being a bathtub probably didn't help there. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Nice article in @nytimes.com by @sominisengupta.bsky.social about the "gold standard" science executive order. As you can tell from my quote, the EO is double speak that's designed to give the administration the ability to dismiss science they don't like. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/03/c...
