This might be a good time for the NY Times to recall that Ratcliffe's first nomination for the job in 2019 fell over because he had "embellished" his supposed experience, claiming to have put terrorists in jail and arrested hundreds of illegal aliens in a day. #uspol www.nytimes.com/2025... 1/2

Not exactly carping, but how is this a new theory? Anyone who wanted to survive Twitter/X had to learn this theory in some form. Block the real trolls, mute the bores, "let's leave it there" for discussions that are going nowhere. The Let Them Theory www.melrobbins.com/b... 1/3

Given the demographics of his supporters, Abbott shows good judgement in focusing on bequests rather than donations. #auspol www.theguardian.com/...

Snap! Just after Trump's organization, I wrote about the US as " The dispensable nation" Kori Schake has a piece in Foreign Affairs with the same headline, and most of the same point, from a US perspective crookedtimber.org/20... 1/2

It’s unfair to say all Trump supporters are racists. Trump embodies many different kinds of evil (cruelty, corruption, greed, misogyny, downwards envy, know-nothingism) and his supporters are a broad coalition of supporters of these. #uspol

Bernard Keane written this same post a dozen times about different governments without ever explaining why the problem is excessive spending rather than inadequate tax revenue #auspol #crikey revenue.www.crikey.com.au/20... 1/2

Seriously, i dont think Americans are going to get this until it’s too late.

Is selling off Santos to a foreign buyer in Australia’s national interest? First, define national interest | John Quiggin www.theguardian.com/...

Not surprising, and I don't suppose Trumpists will care that humanists aren't coming to the US. But it's not the only planned conference being moved. And this will play out over years to come - no one sensible will choose a US location if they haven't already booked. www.atheists.org/202... 1/2

Not all that surprising. Unless tourists stop coming, the demand for beds is unchanged. No easy answer, but low-cost public/social housing needs expansion www.uq.edu.au/news/a... 1/2

When do we get the "Mission Accomplished" photo-op?

Best case scenario for Trump, unconditional surrender by Iran (whatever that means). Worst case, Iran sinks a US aircraft carrier. Neither seems very likely. but the second appears to be possible #War nationalsecurityjour... 1/3

Waiting for Wongs performance. A deeply concerned raised eyebrow telling Iran to sue for peace despite being attacked unlawfully, urging restraint but reinforcing Israel’s right to self defence. Stressing her new found belief that Iran has military nuclear ambitions. Theatre of the absurd.

I got this one completely wrong. But the calculations that made this a bad idea for Trump haven't changed. If the US starts taking casualties as a result, this will be a disaster for him. www.nytimes.com/live...

One of the reasons people worry about the possibility of population decline is that there would be fewer new ideas and therefore less progress. 1/5

Europe needs to force divestiture on US cloud firms. AWS has already gone halfway by establishing a European subsidiary. www.nytimes.com/2025...

Preach it, Bernard: NSW clubs celebrated for the vulturous, blood-sucking, amoral, gouging misery they inflict on their communities www.crikey.com.au/20...

I've moved pretty slowly on using ChatGPT and similar. But it does a great job on file conversions. I've done standard LaTeX to Beamer and Harvard style references to .RIS. Quick and easy for a job that would be slow and tedious for me. 1/3
