Short, comfy things seem to do it for me. Last year it was Anne of Green Gables, currently it's a combo of Murderbot and cosy murder mysteries. I think the key connecting factor is that I'm able to read most of these in a single day, or single sitting, so I don't get stuck.

Same goes for your characters. Each of them has a vocal range, based on their age, culture, level of education, region, level of articulacy. If all your characters end up sounding just like you, then you didn't give them a voice, or any way to express themselves.

Also, begging people to realize that if they want more quality art of any time and don't like paying for it, then for the love of the universe support UBI and Universal Healthcare. Then creatives can create more art without having to turn it into a side hustle.
