There's a lot going on so you might have missed the fact that the Chinese hack into most of our major telecom companies was found to be much worse than publicly stated good thing a bunch of dipshits obliterated whatever was left of functional telecom oversight!

How very British... ukdefencejournal.org.uk/britain-want...

I remain convinced that the entire country, including Trump, would be much happier if we just Truman Showed him

Listen, Broligarchy is not some cute synonym for oligarchy. It's genuinely different & WAY more dangerous. I'm a sociologist who's been studying the ultra-rich globally for 17 yrs, entering their world as an offshore wealth mgr. Published 2 books abt them. 🧵Broligarchs are distinct in 3 ways:

Latest piece in @theatlantic.com Partly inspired by Signal scandal. Here we have Trump’s court speaking their uncensored views on Europe and Europeans should take them at their word. It might allow Europe to save itself, and save the USA in the process. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Bill Browder and Stephanie Baker with interesting 'big picture' perspectives on Trump-Putin here. Disorder suits the kleptocrats. @billbrowder.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/6oic...

🚨Thrilled to share our new research note: "In the Trenches: A Hands-on Approach to Teaching Data Collection in Terrorism Studies." Co-authored w/ Dr. Sarah Carthy & based on a course that trained 400+ grad students at Leiden in open source data collection. pt.icct.nl/article/tren...

🧵 This is a perfect example of what I've be describing as disordered discourse, and it's threat to democracy. Politicians are afraid to speak openly about key issues. Why? Because disordered discourse has captured the system itself—forcing obedience, punishing dissent, and making truth irrelevant.

French Senator Claude Malhuret: "Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."

@nils-gilman.bsky.social Have you left Twitter?

The curious thing about billionaires defying the rule of law and the orders of the court, is that their wealth depends entirely on enforceable legal rights: contract, property, and so on. Those saying court orders have no value need to be careful what they wish for.

How do you know a tree when you see it? 🧵1/8

‘De samenleving zou weleens wat kritischer tegenover het verhaal van Silicon Valley mogen staan. Technologie is niet zomaar een instrument, maar verandert ook hoe mensen denken’ Belangrijk gesprek met hoogleraar Reijer Passchier: www.volkskrant.nl/tech/de-ware...

1/5. The way Trump, Trump Jr, Tuberville, and Hannity are talking now about Greenland, Mexico, Panama, and Canada plagiarizes Putin in 2013, before the first invasion of Ukraine.

Bagehot calls Tony Blair’s “On Leadership” a “self-help book for people who think they should run G7 countries”, and honestly, reading that phrase was an excellent way to start my day. 😂

Elon Musk’s growing hostile political interference in Europe must be firmly countered by the UK, German and other governments being targeted by him. Musk’s interventions are ill-informed, inflammatory and divisive. He caved under determined Brazilian regulatory pressure before and will do so again.

Dear followers, if you read one book this year, let it be Thieves of State by Sarah Chayes. About corruption, dispair, rebellions and extremism, and injustice. And fascinating history. It changed my perspective.

Just sent out a post on what I'm calling the "Vatnik-Tell". These are the issues that the real pro-Putin forces want to force on Ukraine. They are worse than a NATO-ban. Its no European peace-keepers and a perverse definition of non-aligned. You've been warned. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Gift to oneself

Economics often appears to work in isolation: "It is now well established that many human behaviors spread on social networks." www.nber.org/papers/w33285 Boy do I remember resistance to this idea 20 years ago. :-)

Assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups, schrijft cyberveiligheidsexpert Brenno de Winter in De Validatiecrisis. Het boek leest als één lange waarschuwing om toch vooral dóór te vragen: waar baseer jij dit eigenlijk op? www.binnenlandsbestuur.nl/digitaal/nie...

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... @iamhurst.bsky.social is absolutely right. The EU needs to take this threat seriously before it's too late. He's just come out in support of the AfD, by the way. If Europe values its democracy, it will *enforce* its digital laws, not just talk about it.

If you like this thread, let me know and I'll post some more. 🙏

To my dying day, I'll never understand the slow-witted absurdity, of countries continually telling Putin what THEY WONT DO. Just say - all options are on the table, and keep Russia guessing.
